Question about IBM P 202 21" CRT Monitor

IBM 21" frequent tick sound!

Hi everyone,
I have an IBM P202 21" Black CRT monitor, i bought it last year from a friend, it's in a very good condition, whn i got it i tested it on the 1600x1200@75Hz resolution for a few minutes to make sure it's working at max without breaking down instantly. I then set it at 1200x960@85Hz resolution and left it like than till i set the refresh rate at 100Hz 2 months ago.

The monitor is still working fine, though before i set it at the 100Hz refresh rate, it used to go out of focus for a few seconds, then make this tick sound then shake very hard for 2 seconds, then go back to normal, it did it 3 times in the course of the first 8 months.

After i noticed it stopped doing that, i thought i would go to max refresh rate, i set it at 100Hz 2 months ago, then 1 month ago i noticed it started to make this sound ... closest i could describe it is that it's close to the sound that the monitor makes when you shut it off, you know ... that crackling sound, as if you're making pop-corn, but of course MUCH slower, as if you took that sound, and stretched it to 100 times the time it takes to make it, so it crackles once every say 30 minutes.

If i get my ears closer to its back i hear it crackling nearly all the time, but at a very low sound, so i can't hear except the higher ones when i'm working.

I tried lower resolutions, but they don't go away, just are lower in volume.

What i wanted to ask, is my monitor dying, and a bit of an information question ... what's that sound when the monitor shuts off please?

Thanks for your support.

I have a similar problem but never adjusted my resoution or any setting.

I just moved to my new apartment and on connecting my machine, the fist time it worked. On the second day, i started getting this ticking sound. When I power, I get the normal monitor sound, followed by a ticking sound of the same magnitude.

After a few seconds, around 10, the sound continues in intervals, 15, 20, or even 30 seconds but alternately. Its more when Im using the mouse e.g. Im the start menu, I get a ticking sound when I move the pointer from one item to the next.

Initially I thought it was a power problem and I replaced my power extensions, but the problem persists.

Too much refresh rate! set it to 60 hz only! you're over-stressing major components on your monitor!

The Monitor not works after the Standby Mode or Switch off

If you have not tried yet, pick a can of freeze-it, or other. Gain access, safely power up and when the monitor goes into standby, hit the area and cool down the IC's. If they are overheating, this has a good chance of bringing them back and identifying your problem. If so, look at better heatsinks, reapply new paste, or install a muffin fan, or seek better ventilation.
Heat is the enemy of all IC's.

Vertical rolling

Does this occur at all resolutions/refresh rates? Did you try changing the resolution? Is it rolling or just displaying multiple screens - similar to this -

I had vertical rolling on the same monitor at 800x600. Changing it to 1024x768 was my "fix".

Many screens on one monitor!

Your monitor is malfunctioning and requires servicing. Unfortunately there is no software solution, and no monitor adjustment buttons will control this problem. Due to the high cost of replacement parts and service technicians, it may be more cost effective to buy a new LCD monitor. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news :(

Well like you I am a little bit green on this level of 'Electrontrickery' My best bet would take it to an 'old fashioned TV repair shop It seems that the problem lays in this level of expertise- What i was a little wary of in CRT monitors/TV's was the high voltages around in the Line Ouptut Transformer areas- very nasty.
