Picture with distorted, flickering, darkened area on rt. side of screen . Up to half of the screen sometimes. Sometimes looks like vertical hold is rolling some. Then will be clear with no or tiny amount...

There are several possibilities here.

To be able to help better we'd need to know the model number.

The most likely suspects are the T-CON board, one of the two backlight inverters and the display itself.

Of those only the last one is usually not curable.

Here's an example of a popular set of inverters that , when one goes bad you can get one half of the screen very dark:

http://www.coppelltvrepair.com/p/428/sanyo-dp42848-p42848-00-backlight-inverters-replacement-for-dark-screen-no-image-problem

On the other hand, if you have vertical shadows and some flickering that's probably NOT going to be a backlight inverter.

Flickering would be caused by either the T-CON or the panel.

Since a bad panel is mostly NOT curable you may want to check the price of a replacement T-CON and decide if it is worth taking a shot with one before you displace the TV.

Again, the thing to start with is the model.

Hope this helps.

I would to see a picture of what it looks like. What you are describing sounds like a faulty LCD panel tab. Samsung LCD panels are known for this problem.

if rebooting the monitor would do no good, try to get a spare monitor cable if the same flickering issue took effect. If it is so, then call your pc provider to repair your monitor..

Screen blinks and then goes out. tap on side and causes flickers

sure sounds like loose solder joints, look for them in the deflection circuit, just find the hard plastic encapsulated body with the thick red wire sticking out of it thats where usually the loose solder joints develop.

Shadow down right side of screen on a toshiba 44NHM84 44" DLP television

shadows at the bottom of the screen sound like moisture that was "wicked up" between the screen layers and dryed out leaving a stain. DO NOT get these screens wet, use nothing but a damp soft cloth; just a few drops of water running down the screen can cause a fairly large stain. Some people have suggested that they may be professionally cleaned, but the risk of damage is too great on the user level.
