SATA device not found

on startup I get the message
PRIMARY MASTER:<SATA device not found>
SECONDARY MASTER:<SATA device not found>.

I have checked the serial ATA cables and connections, reset the CMOS using the jumpers and by removing the battery - all to no avail. Is there anything else anyone can suggest?

the motherboard is an ASUS K8S-MX

Go into the BIOS and switch you SATA drives to IDE mode.
