Can I test dryer timer to see if its any good?

I am trying to find out if I can test the timer to my Whirlpool dryer (model LER7646JQ0) to find out if it failed or not. I have already replaced the thermostat and was about to replace the heating element and found out by testing it with an ohm meter that it did not need replacement. Is there someway I can test the timer to see if it's bad? The reason I think the timer is bad because I tested the heating element while the dryer was running and was only getting 110 from the two legs and not 220. So I removed the two wires from the heat element turned on the dryer and checked each wire. One wire read 110 that looks like it goes to the moter. The other wire wich is a jumper from the thermal cutoff got no reading. Followed that wire, (orange in color), to the timer on the front panel of the dryer. Hope this makes sense. Any help would be appreciated.

Check if you have 220 at the terminal block. The power is 220 hot to hot and 110 for each leg to ground. Generaly the has two speeds (220 regular and 110 for gentle). There are two heating elements that are ciontrolled the same way. The gentle cycle uses one leg and the heat ing elements use the other. The answer is how the dryer is set. Knowing that and using elmination you will find the problem in the controlls because the heating elements work or thew are open. The motor has two windings or it works or it works or has an open. I could not find a schematic but you may see it on the back oe a piece of paper in the controlls. I have faith in you finding the problem very quickly from what you said and what I told you. Good luck. Don't forget to cycle (turn them off and on) your breakers to make sure one is not intermittent.

I do not think a "NO HEAT" problem can be caused by the timer.
Sounds like another electrical problem:
Have you check the house breaker or wall receptacle to see if you are feeding 220V to your dryer?
Have you check your hi-limit thermostat to see if it has continuity?

Those are the most common causes of "NO HEAT"

NO HEAT in my whirlpool dryer model # LER7646JQ0.

Check for 220 volts from one terminal to the other on the heating element. If it has volts then it may be the centrifical switch on the motor. The switch won't let the heat work until the motor reaches a certain speed then it kicks in and you have heat. Most have 2 large red wires that are the heater wires check from where the wires connect with ohm meter. you can slide the switch on the motor shaft by putting your finger on the slide behind the switch
& pushing it back if the meter don't move the switch is bad.It is a safety thing if the motor should stop it would stop the fan and burn something up maybe your house. If you don't have volts at the heating element get the diagram out & check everything from the timer to the heating element. I'm not to good at explaining things. Hope this helps good luck

My dryer does not heat. Fuse, thermostats, heat element all have continuity, power chord is good, 240v at plugin... stumped. It is a model # LER4634BQ1 Whirlpool SN# ME4471484

dryer_heating-element.jpg Heating Element

It is possible that your dryer isn't heating because its heating element is defective. Heating elements are irrepairable. If yours has ceased to function properly, you will have to replace it. Open your dryer's cabinet and locate the heating element so that you can test it.
dryer_thermal-fuse.jpg Thermal Fuse

Another possible cause for a dryer not heating up could be attributed to a faulty thermal fuse. Once a dryer's thermal fuse has blown, it is no longer of any use. If your dryer's fuse is blown, you will have to replace it. Open up your dryer's cabinet and locate its thermal fuse so that you can test it.
dryer_thermostat.jpg Thermostat

If any of your dryer's thermostats have become defective, they could be the reason that your dryer is not heating. Open up your dryer's cabinet and test each of your dryer's thermostats. If any are faulty, replace them.
dryer_timer.jpg Timer motor

A defective timer motor could also cause your dryer to not heat up. Test your dryer's timer motor. If it is no longer functioning as it should, replace either the entire motor assembly, or just its motor.

Whirlpool Dryer not heating

The motor has to be running for voltage to exit the motor going to the heater. With the back off the dryer and the motor running you should read 220 volts at the heater if all safetys and thermostats are good.
There is a thermal cut out relay on the heat canister. It must read continuity also.
Remember you must remove at least one wire from each component being tested to get a true open or closed reading. If a wire is left connected you get a false reading.
The heating element could be broken and part of the heater wire touching the canister. This would cause a continuity reading and still no heat.
Finally, yes,the centrifugal switch in the motor could be bad and not sending power to the heater on the red wire.

No start

If a dryer is not working at all that's not good! But it doesn't mean you need to go appliance shopping just yet. It may be something very simple like a bad door switch or even a broken door switch actuator, in a kenmore dryer there is a tab thats sticks out of a hole in the wall that allows the dryer to run only if the door is shut, other models may have button that protrudes out of the dryer and when the door is shut, this allows the dryer to run. These switches go out from time to time, also if a dryer is full of lint build-up over time this will cause the dryer high limit or fuse to blow. The fuse is located near where the blower is in most cases. When the air in the dryer gets way too hot the fuse/hi-limit will blow and the house wont burn down

Whirpool dryer won't heat up

You need to replace the thermal fuse and the timer. A bad timer will over draw a thermal fuse and cause it to blow.

Please remember to unplug the dryer before servicing

Ghost in my dryer????

Here are a few ideas of what might be wrong.. based on your description.. You've bypassed the thermal fuse and the dryer worked however once you removed the bypass, did it work after that? based on your symptom.. it appears that one of the auto-ressting 'overtemp snap switches' may be your problem and may be shutting your system down because it is tripping from excessive heat or it is prematurely tripping because it is defective. I've included a website link that shows assembly drawings and parts breakdown for you to examine but I suspect that you have a bad overtemp switch.. ( I assume that you've cleaned out all lint etc from the vent system both inside and outside the dryer) If you haven't... then you may not get adequate air flow and you truly are getting an overtemp condition.. Good luck.. Here is the link http://www.pcappliancerepair.com/model-display.php

Hope this helps !
