I made the mistake of downloading something today, however it might have been a virus of some sort. before my very eyes it made my desktop dissapear. it kept the wallpaper but everything else had vanished. i managed to restart my PC with the intention of doing a system restore to see if that would rectify the problem but it would not let me restor passed today. the situation i have now is that my PC boots up fine, you then get the desktop with all it's programmes/icons etc. but the PC is continually flickering between desktop and nothingness. it is flickering so often i do not even have the chance to try and access any files or anything. please can you help.

Re: need to do a system restore but can't
Go to http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm and run the scan. If it finds a virus then try to remove it. If it cannnot remove a virus it finds then call Microsoft and they will help you remove the virus. You have to run a virus scanner and determine what virus you have first though.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, before you jump to conclusions, try disabling your mousepad and try using a USB mouse instead. I have never heard of a virus that does something that stupid. And in the unlikely event that it IS a virus, you can just purge the virus, not reformat the laptop.
First. disconnect from the internet, take out the network cable.
Boot into safe mode.(usually F8 on boot up)
Switch off system restore(at least for now)
run your antivirus on a full scan.(if you dont have any... use AVG Free or Microsoft Security suite free)
Run a good malware scanner like Malwarebytes.
You may need to have access to the internet to download these programs.
If this helps then you can turn system restore back on if you wish(start/programs/accessories/system tools)
Try downloading Google Chrome and install Flash again. If the browser wont load the game, system restore to an earlier date, and back up all the files you downloaded from the date your restoring your computer to, till today on an external hard drive/thumbdrive and run a virus scan and make sure you don't have a malaware virus.
Hope this helps ^^. Please dont forget to rate, Thanks
This could be caused by a corrupted operating system, a virus or a faulty memory card. You may first try to restore your computer to a date when you think it last allowed you to download something. See if it works.
To run system restore, go to start>all programs>accessories>system restore.
try changing your homepage to what you want it to be. if it keeps reverting back to that or won't let you change it at all - i seem to remember an adware infection called search save or cool savings (something to that effect). If that's the case you will need some sort of virus/adware removal tool to get rid of it or you can reinstall windows.
