Exactly the problem described by another poster--I would love to know what to do. I love my machine but this will be the third time in less than one year of owning it that I will need to have it repaired!!
Could be a loose connection inside or a circuit board problem, most likely the latter...Bernina Artista machines seem to have greater numbers of circuit board failures to me. Static discharge can fry it in a second.

My Bernette did exactly the same thing as you describe and when I took it to the mechanic there was a gear right inside that had split on the main drive path. It was a nylon gear and it had cracked right through the middle - my machine was about 12 years old at the time.
After one store advised I junk the machine, I then priced the part from Bernina head office, spoke to another mechanic and he was able to send my machine to another mechanic he knew who could pull the thing apart quicker because he'd done the repair before. I was warned it would cost $270-350 but I love the machine so said go ahead.
I'd suggest you take your husky to a local husky dealer for a quote on this, it does sound similar.
Hi, definately a tech can adjust this and it is pretty easy (10 minutes) though one needs a special screwdriver type tool called an eccentric tool (though its possible to just center the needlebar by hand). There is a small screw in the stitch width mechanism near the front left of the needle bar that must be slightly loose. It needs to be loosend more then center the needle and tightend down again. Sorry I can't describe where exactly it is without showing you pics.

Its a lovely swiss made machine, this is an electronic motor so the needle pressure should remain constant no matter what speed you sew at. The needle staying down and the squealing sounds more like drive issues inside or possibly gunk buildup.
If it was my machine, I would take it to a qualified Elna technician and ask for him to look at it. These machines are small and well made so well worth spending the money to give it a service and get it back to 1000% IMHO.
A lot of people don't know this, but there is a dimmer dial on the front panel, just below the display on the left side. It can get bumped when transporting or picking up the machine. If not then you need a fuse in the base plate or possibly a new circuit board.
I don't really know WHITE sewing machines but I can tell you that it might be a loose connection at the inverter. Te reason I say it may be loose is, you said it comes and goes. The vibration that sewing creates might be cause it to loosen up. It sounds like a simple fix but it might take a trained service tech to find the source.
