Hi Lady JL
Well, if you look for good sound, quality (low cost) go for Creative lines, like Audigy 2, or X-FI for music. good sound cards, and get a good 5.1 speakers from Creative Labs. like 5700 model or else.
depending on what you want to heard! Creative is the solution

Can I turn the Logitech z-2300 to a 4.1 speaker system?

You will need a separate pair of powered speakers to do that, plugged separately. The quality of the sound will remain the same on the front ones, the overall quality will depend on the new ones.

Proper set up

Try to google the brand name and get the user's manual. Usually the extra cords plug into one of the other speakers and then one to the computer. Sound card could be an issue but I doubt it.
