Thanks, I did contact one, went into their shop, they finished the model number for me, and shook their heads, I say their cuz there was two of them doing the same thing. The told me it would cost around $300.00, said they would have to come out and test to find the problem, I really thought they were pulling one over on me, if they seemed to know the problem, why couldnt they just tell me so I can fix it myself. So, thanks, guess I will be calling them.

  • Brenda_sue Dec 01, 2007

Is that possible for me to fix, although just looking and the sealed system seems to have a 5 year warranty, that is in the sealed system part isnt it?

  • Brenda_sue Dec 02, 2007

Thank you guys so much, I am going to attempt this myself... very helpful and next time will come here if I need an answer.

You'll find that the defrost heater is the problem most of the time.

The sealed system consists of the compressor, evaporator, the condenser and connecting tubing.
The defrost heater is not part of this.
To access this, remove lower back wall of freezer by removing screws on either side of light socket. UNPLUG REFRIGERATOR.
Remove back wall. The defrost heater is at bottom of evaporator coils. It has a wire going to it on each side. Remove 2 screws, one on each end of it. Test unit for continuity. If you take to your parts store, they can test for you. Take your model number with you. If the glass tube is blackened, it's probably bad.

    Part number should bbe, WR51X10053.
This is a ge part number.
    It's a very common heater.
You can always google the part number.

Fridge working intermittenly... if we unplugg it for a while and plug back in it starts to work fine. It seems as if when it gets to the defrost cycle.. it never starts back up.

Ok so yours doesnt have a thermostat. It has a main computer (motherboard), thermistors (sensors that measure temperature, like a thermostat but not the same), and a defrost heater. So diagnosis of your defrost problem is tricky. You may need to call for service. Make sure they are familiar with GE electronic control refrigs. Like i said in the beginning they dont work like older units and are more tricky to diagnose.

To answer your question, no that part is not in the sealed system. That is only a few parts that are still under warranty. If it happens to be the defrost heater that part is easy to change, however it is not simple to check all the components.

If there is no cooling at all on the fridge section but the freezer works then it is confirmed that the compressor and gas pressure is OK. Now shut off the fridge and leave it powered off while you clean and check the evaporator for frost. If frost is seen it is a good indication as the compressor is working with sufficient gas within.
Now after about 6 hours plug in the fridge to start. Observe cooling to happen in about one hour and ice to from under three hours.
Earlier make sure that the thermostat was set to normal mode for freezer and fridge.
However if ice forms in the freezer then observe the fridge for about 24 hours for cooling to continue and the fridge to cut off . If not the auto defrost timer, or the thermostat must be checked. Frost formation without defrosting could block the air flow and so shut the air passage to the fridge. Also the blower fan must work and if this is not working then the fan can be faulty. Also a fault on the control unit is a suspect to non functioning of any one of these components.
If defrost timer works but frost keeps forming check while the compressor shuts if the heaters are working, check continuity of the heaters.
So try this test using a multi-meter on the defrost timer and the thermostat and make your observations so that we come to the solution.

Freezer not freezing

If freezer is icing up, you might have a defrost problem. Frost free models have a heating element that is controlled by a timer to automatically defrost ice, defrost timer turns on defrost heating element every 12 hours to melt ice in freezer and allow good air flow.
You can test defrost element with an ohm meter(located inside freezer coils-will have two wires going to a plug connection), if OK replace defrost timer (located in various places depending on make and model

GE regrigerator not cooling or freezing

first defrost it by turning it off for 1\2 to 1 full day,put towels on the floor to catch the water, when a refridgerator gets frosted up it cant circulate the cold air,and if its one with the freezer on top then the cold air cant blow down into the refridgerator, check inside the refridgerator at the top where the thermostat cover is there will be a vent hole,it could have ice built up so much that its totally blocking the air flow. This usually happens when hot food is put in the refridgerator and causes steam,or the refridgerator runs too much caused by bad door seals,or the cooling fins on the back or bottom underneath plugged with dust and the freon gets too hot causing condensation inside the freezer which causes it to frost up,a plugged drain hole will back up water and freeze, the fan in the freezer may have stopped working, which is about a $60.00 part, and finally a bad defrost element (about a $40.00 part)which is a glass tube inside the freezer with a coiled up wire inside it that heats up at certain times to defrost any ice build up,(which is the last thing to check)

I havs a side by side and the top won't stay cold or freeze.

Cold air being heavier than warmer air will settle to the lower levels. Check for fan motor operation inside the freezer section. If the fan is not operating you meed service. Also check for frost on the back wall of the freezer section. If the fan motor does not circulate the air frost will form on the back wall, also if the defrost system is not functioning.

Frost in Freeze

Hi Frezer Frost.
It sounds like your defrost circuit in the refrigerator has gone south. This melts the ice off of the cooling coil in the freezer section every 8 - 10 hours of run time.
If you are old enough to remember the manual defrost refrigerators, that is why you had to defrost them occasionally. The ice layer on the coil acts as an insulator, preventing the coil from working properly.

Kenmore regrigerator

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
  • if you already checked this and think it is a different problem then let me know, i will help you figure it out.
