Kenmore 14.8 cft - temperature between 5 and -22 degrees (-15 and -30 C)

The temperature in our brand new Kenmore 14.8 cft chest freezer is going down to -22 Fahrenheit and then the compressor shuts down until the temperature is above 5 degrees F and then cools everything down to -22 again. Is that a "feature" or bad design or very likely a defective sensor/control unit?

Thanks,
Tom

We had somebody there from Sears who claimed he could not check anything because the temperature was set too low. He turned the thermostat to "4" (that was in the morning) and told us he was ordering some replacement parts. When I got home in the evening, there were parts in the upper part of the freezer that were defrosted. That freezer is a piece of junk and I will very likely call my credit card company to get it returned as Sears would only take it back for a "restocking fee"...

Big...this is likely normal. I'm not sure where you're measuring that temp from. If it is the fan outlet, this is possible. The fact that the unit is staying below 5 degrees means that it is within spec. You do have a warranty. Ask Sears to come on in and check it out.

Your 'duty cycle'...that amount of time that the compressor is on should be about 20% of a unit of time...say 25 minutes out of 2 hours. Is that about right? If so, enjoy your ice cream.

Can a kenmore chest freezer model 253.16502101 also run as a fridge?

No, only a select few catering appliances can be a fridge or a freezer depending on the temperature setting. Yours is a freezer.

Is there an ambient temperature range outside of which the freezer won't work well? Will it go down to zero degrees?

It seem ambient temperature will not affect so much inside temperature since any freezer has good insulation. Normally freezer will go down to below zero degree

Kenmore chest freezer does not stay below 30 degrees compressor runs but I don't see a fan to cool the compressor

If your chest freezer is less than 50 years old, it does not have a fan. Cooling coils contact inner walls of freezer compartment, warm coils dissipate heat through outside walls of freezer. If compressor runs, temp is 30+ degrees, gasket is OK, lid not left open, then you have one of two contions: 1. Low capacity compressor 2. Refrigerant leak. Solution to either is to replace freezer. (My opinion: Don't get a Kenmore brand, which generally ties you into poor warranty and slow and poor service.) No matter what brand name is on the freezer, it is most likely manufactured by Electrolux (in St. Cloud, MN) or Haier (from China). Look at the model / serial number plate before purchase to see where it was manufactured. Yes, the USA manufactured ones are better. (and I'm not just saying that because the plant is less than 15 miles from where I am sitting right now)

My wife and I bought a Kenmore chest freezer (14.8 cubic foot) about 6 weeks ago. It is made by Frigidaire for Sears, and the model number is #253.165.42105, serial # WB94341279. It has been working OK. ...

This is well with in factory specifications. Hot air rises and cold air drops. Because a chest freezer does not have a fan to circulate the air it is normal for the basket to be warmer than the bottom of the freezer. The bottom of the freezer is used for food you want to keep for a longer period of time. What you store in the basket is food you will freeze for a short period of time. Ice cream should not be kept in the basket. As you fill your freezer with food you will find that the temperature will equal out because the frozen food will take up the place of the frozen air which will give you a more stable freezer temperature.
Try your test when you have it full of food.

Need -20 degrees Celsius...Will this brand get there?

If all is ideal maybe -10 an occationally -15 and this is F considerable coolder than -20C. ALSO fyi a chest freezer will stay at or below these temps better than an upright and especially a self defrosting model. Because a chest freezer you dont loose all the cold air when you open the door. TYhey are not made in auto matic defrost as far as I know (never have seen one but then I havent been looking for one either. An up right freezer can be manual defrost or automatic. but the cold air falls ouit every time the door is opened.

Please let em know if this helps you by giving me as high a mark as you can and thank you for using fixya.

Kenmore 23.1 cf Chest Freezer not cooling below 14F

Make sure everything is working, I.E. compressor, fans. Now I need to know if the freezer shuts off at 14 degrees, or does it continue to run without making temp. If it shuts off, then the first place to look is the thermostat. It may be out of calibration. If it continues to run, then the solution may be as simple as cleaning the condenser coil. or the defrost has malfunctioned somehow. Defrost probleams will cause excess ice on the inside coil. You may need to remove the panels to see how much ice is on it. It sounds like the compressor is good, as it is pretty cold. Just not cold enough. A deep freeze should be at least 0.
