Question about Whirlpool SF367 Gas Kitchen Range

1 Answer

Whirlpool service sucks. I bought a new range on nov17 2007 and had it installed on Nov 21. The oven igniter did not spark from the get go. I phoned whirlpool the same day and they could not send a repairman out to me for 7 days.On Nov 27 ,the repairman stated it was the high voltage sending unit and he did not have it. He also stated that the oven was unsafe to use and shut off the gas to the whole range. When I again phoned Whirlpool they stated that the part would take 3 days to arrive and a repair man would come the following Mon. 6 more days. They did not care that the range was disconnected and that I couldnt cook for my family and they would not replace the stove. It took several more phone calls to upper management until Leons (the retailer where it was bought) replaced it for me on Nov 29.

I agree and understand your feeling. However, I would like to reassure you that you would have gotten the same service from any of the other manufacturers.
Whirlpool no longer has it's own service department, all repair work is done by seperate companies that contract. The bulk is done by A&E nationwide. Maytag has closed it's service department also, as has Frigidaire. GE still has some company employed techs, but only in select urban areas, most of their repair is also by contractors.
I have no stake in whirlpool or any appliance company, but as a repairman, I hear the same comments as yours almost everyday about one company or another.
The only retail company that offers repair service nationwide now is Sears, which also owns A&E factory services.
The management of the manufacturing companies have given up on the expense of keeping service departments because the stock analysts don't like seeing a company with a large customer service department and will shy away from investing in them. They want a company with low overhead and large profits, no one is interested in a company that tries to set a groundwork of support so that the company is still strong 5-10 years from now.

Whirlpool WFG361LVS2 oven. Broiler and burners ignite but oven will not. I can hear gas and the igniter sparks but will never light the oven.

get someone to hold a long gas match near the main burner when you try the oven . If it lights then I would suspect the igniter. even tho you can hear it snapping .

Is there a pilot for the oven that can go out and needs to be manually relit? I have alrady replaced the igniter

The Whirlpool SF357 (SF357PEKQ0 specifically) does not have a pilot light; only the electric igniters that light the gas on demand for both the range and the cooktop.

On my gas ovens, checking the ignition is easiest with the warming drawer removed and the cover plate removed from the oven. Do you see a glow at the igniter? If yes, then the igniter is probably working. If not, check that the wiring harness between the igniter and the control board is connected and giving the appropriate power.

The next thing to check is that the oven gas valve is open. (Mine have a separate valve here.) Then check that nothing is blocking the gas line and that the regulator is opening and closing properly. We had an old oven that would start the gas flow and come up to temperature normally during the pre-heat time. However, when the oven cooled, the regulator wouldn't reopen thus the oven wouldn't stay at temperature. The regulator could be forced to open with a tap to the mechanism when the oven needed to come back to temperature.

Whirlpool has manuals and parts lists for the SF357 ranges on their site. . The installation guide is here: . The owner's manual is here: .

I hope this helps.

(In the case of our old oven, we replaced the entire range. The difference in price between a new range and the needed parts (and labor) to fix the old one were nearly the same.)

Oven will not come on

Does your clock work? This sounds like either a lack of voltage to the oven igniter, or a failed spark igniter or both. Your oven igniter is the easiest to check. With broiler door open or the plate above your oven burner removed, turn your oven on and look for a red to white glow near your ovens burner. This is a ceramic glow plug, and it will not allow gas to leave your manifold until the igniter has reached the proper temperature. If there is no glow, then your igniter has failed and needs to be replaced. The spark module that clicks as you turn your burner has obviously either died, or there isn't enough voltage being supplied to allow it to start up. Unplug your 110v wire from the stove and try a hair dryer or other 110v appliance at the wall outlet to determine if you have proper voltage there.

The worst case scenario is that both your oven igniter and spark module have died, which is rare unless you have had a power surge or lightning strike near the power transformer to your house.

The cheapest way to test this is to buy the oven igniter first, since they are far cheaper than the spark module. If the new igniter lights up, then you can be pretty sure it isn't your power outlet, and can safely move on to the spark module.

Where is the oven pilot light ?

Most modern ranges don't use pilot lights at all; if your burners are lit by high voltage spark, the oven will use either that or a 'surface igniter' to turn on the oven. Even though pilot lights don't use much, they still use some and this would add to your bill (if you have one-we have free gas).
