I had the same power issue. My 2720 would frequently restart. I found it to be the brass connectors on the power cord. I replaced the cord and all was fixed. A friend who owns a 2720 had the same problem and resolution. looks to be a design error. I expect at some point the brass connectors on the until will have issues....

The same problem. I thought it was the fuse in the car adapter, but the problems seems to be with the unit: it happens with the inhouse power adapter as well as the car adapter.

The power on my Street Pilot 2720 cuts out the restarts from the beginning. I tried a new cord and a different vehicle but the problem persists just the same.

I did 2 things, one of which solved the problem. i saw that lots of people were trying to fix this by addressing the cable and plug, but this was not fixing the issue. i began to clean the connectors (with fine sandpaper) but they looked ok anyway, and also the restart issue was not happening when the gps was in motion - it was also happening when everything was still, so the cable could not be the problem. the second thing i did was, i went to and did a software update (not the maps) I just went here and this thing did everything automatically. I just got back from a short 30 min trip and the unit did not reset itself anymore. I have to assume the problem was in the software. go to and use the WebUpdater to update firmware and stuff on your gps. Oh, one thing i can't get it to work is the voice driving directions now, i'll try to fix that too, but for now i'm happy the unit does not reset itself anymore.

Garmin has updated the software in most of their GPS units due to a new satellite being launched in 2008 which was causing problems. When GPS units got a lock on the new software, it would free the units. The first thing, when encountering a problem with the GPS unit, is to update the unit's internal software at the Garmin site. This might address the problem right away. After that, if there's still a problem, come back here and we'll see if we can help.

Thanks for the tip. I was getting ready to cut off the plug and directly solder the cable to the internal connections, but decided to try the software update first. This seems to have solved the problem. So does anybody know why this works?

My garmir street pilot 2720 is not powering up. what to look @ first

In order
1- Check using another device the power outlet
2- Check the garmins power cord, are the connections still firm, if they are loose and sloppy, bend the metal tangs out a LITTLE bit
also note the metal tangs in the power outlet may be bent in from continued use bend them into towards the centre of the plug NOTE PULL THE RIGHT FUSE ON THE VEHICLE BEFORE BENDING OR STICKING ANYTHING INTO THE HOLE TO ADJUST THE TANGS
3- In the end that you plug into the cars power outlet is a 1 amp fuse, is this still good.
4- Does it work in somebody else's car

Unable to update unit

When you plug in the USB cable, if your System, Hardware, Device Manager lists "GARMIN Devices", then the problem has to be in your network connection or Garmin WebUpdater. If your Device Manager doesn't list "GARMIN Devices" then the problem is in the computer, USB cable, or 2720.

I have three 2720s right now with bad USB ports. I'm going to try replacing the USB driver chip in each unit, but now I'm just guessing. Hope this helps. Tom

Restarting while in use

Mine just started doing the same thing. I took apart the speaker power cord, but don't see anything wrong with it. I thought I saw the unit turn off/on one time when I moved the cigarette plug back and forth, but as I said the wires are fine. I have the power cord apart right now and have 12 volts hooked up to the wires directly and the unit has been sitting here for 30 minutes without resetting.
