My Microwave vents are letting in cold air during the winter

My home was built in 2003 and I have had a problem with the microwave letting in cold air during the winter through the fan and vents at the top of the unit. The unit itself is new 7/2007, but I had the same issues with the old unit. I have taped off the fan grates and I have a towel over the top vents (while I am not using it. Any advice would be appreciated.

The installation manual should help you deal with these issues. If you don't have yours, you can download it here:

As a bonus, you can also get your owner's manual here;

One important thing is to make sure you have a good vent door on the outside of the home. If that's not working right, it allows mor cold air in. Also, the pipe should be insulated.

We purchased a home with the built in model mc0153sf serial # DJ07X01113. we do not have a operators manual. the microwave shuts down when we do a ...

Yes! if the microwave does not have proper ventilation it will go into shutdown, causing it to over heat. The thermal fuse will open if to much heat is detected and can take 30 minutes or more to reset before you can use it again.

Panasonic microwave ovens touch pad is not functioning in winters. But works well on a warm day. Do I need to clean out something specific?

That sounds like a condensation problem as when the microwave is cold the warm air from the kitchen that is laden with moisture is condensing and upsetting the control panel.
Keep it warm and dry? There is nothing specific though.

If there isnt any water in it,it shouldnt freeze. But if you feel safer winterizing it,you should be able to find a winter stabilizer for it at a hardware store or home center

Can i cover my outside house vents in the winter?

you should never cover any vents, they are there for a reason, to keep you safe from fumes, damp, etc.. (If talking about vents that are outside you home). If you are talking about appliance vents then you run the risk of them breaking if you cover the vents, due to overheating

Vents that are outside the home including boiler vents etc... exhume all of the carbon dioxide that is bad for you. Vents that are there to stop damp, if blocked may cause you to have a problem with damp in the future.

Home warranty company saying JennAir M166 built in microwave isn't a true built in

Bottom line is... Home warranty companies will do anything possible to wriggle out of paying for something. (Especially if it's American Home Shield).

I'd suggest offering to fax / email photos and the front cover of your owners manual. Your model is 100% considered a built in unit and they are lying to you and trying to cheat you if they say otherwise.

My microwave is sweating

No. This is usually a sign of poor venting or air flow. It's possible that the coling fan is not circulating the air properly due to a problem with it or maybe the air vents are blocked. Also, there needs to be a couple of inches around a countertop model on all sides - especially the back - to ensure air flow. Look for buildup on the back vent grille. You can listen for the fan to be running and feel the air flow while it's running. If it's weak or not there, it needs inspection / service. A lack of air flow can cause the magnetron to overheat and be damaged. If this is a built-in model also check your air filter, air duct work and outdoor vent flap. Write back if you still have trouble.

Cold air from outside coming in house through vent

Sounds like your damper (flap) outside is working, and that's probably the first thing to check. Wind may be also pulling the damper open from time to time. Hopefully the pipe fitting is sealed, and the pipe is insulated anywhere it runs through any unheated portion of the house. Some amount of cold air getting in will be unavoidable. The best bet next might be to look over the two pages in the installation instructions that deal with outside venting. If you don't have the installation instructions, you can get a copy here: http://www.geappliances.com/service_and_support/literature/ Then if you don't notice any obvious problems with the installation, it may be time to contact the installer for their two cents.
