Question about Sony Grand WEGA KDF-50WE655 50" Rear Projection HDTV

1 Answer

Sony KDF-50WE655 While watching TV we heard poping sound (more like someone snap a piece of hard plastic in two) then screen went black, and heard unusual rapid metallic popping/zapping sound, similar to the sound one hears when turning on flourescent lights coming from the back of TV.  I went and investigated the sound, is in the back of TV center lower bottom, saw some what like a capacitor glowing with electricity. It does sound like the lamps is busted but not sure. does anyone have any suggestion?

Re: Sony KDF-50WE655

It sounds like the lamp is definitly bad.
Look at it and more than likely it is broken.
The lamp is located in the front of the set. The bottom front is a cover that has a dial on each side of the back of the sets that can be turned by hand (counter clockwise) holding the front panel in place.
There is a metal strip that is holding a door in place and can be removed.
The lamp is being held in place by a screw that needs to be removed with an allen wrench.
There are several places that you can buy lamps online.

Sony wega kdf-50we655 went off and thier is a buzzing noise

Anything that sounds like electrical crackling will be coming from either the lamp or lamp driver/ballast boards or their interconnections. The lamp should be examined first as this is the most likely cause.

Replace the lamp. In rare cases, the lamp power supply or lamp ballast may also need replacing. But, replace the lamp first, and use an original Sony lamp not a cheap aftermarket replacement. If this helps, please be sure to rate the fix! Thanks!
