I have had this problem with my desk top HP monitor twice a few years ago and HP fixed it even though it was out of warranty. Now it is happening to my lap top, I now beleive that this is a problem HP with there units.

It may be that the brightness of your monitor is turned all the way down. In the lower left of your keyboard, there is a "FN" key between the windows logo key and the left ctrl key. Hold this fn key down and continually press F8 until the screen brightens up.
Hopefully this helps, keep us posted!

Hi folks I had a similar problem to the 3rd one in which the lights would come on but the screen stayed Black. I searched aroud some HP sites and found a suggestion on reseating the RAM. It worked and takes 5 minutes. Remove all power sources. Remove the cover on the back just below where the Battery goes it has 2 screws. Remove the cover. This exposes the Ram. Mine has 2 sticks one on top of the other slightly overlapped. Each is held in place by 2 small metal tabs pull gently on these an the Ram stick will pop up and you can easily remove it from it's slot. Remove all of it and then reverse the procedure and reinstall it. It takes 5 minutes and mine booted up right away.
