If you are looking to connect two XBox consoles together for offline play, the method can vary depending on the type of XBox you own.
For the original XBox, there should be two supported methods. The first allows you to directly connect two XBox consoles together using a "system link" or Cat 5 Ethernet crossover cable, while the second is to connect up to four XBox consoles using standard networking cables and an Ethernet hub.
With the XBox 360, there should be three methods available. The first is to directly connect the two consoles using a traditional Ethernet cable (RJ45), the second allows up to 16 different XBox 360's to connect by using standard networking cables and an Ethernet hub, while the third uses either a wireless router or the XBox's built-in Ad-Hoc networking tools to make a connection.
If you are unsure how to set up the consoles using any of these methods, you should be able to find step-by-step instructions in the owner's manual for your XBox, or by simply visiting the support section of Microsoft's homepage.
if you want to play online, with other people i am assuming? then what you would want is xbox live. you do have to setup a stable internet connection in order to connect to the internet*. and also you do have to pay a membership fee in order to stay in xbox live.
* and if you want to connect xbox live, you need a cable or dsl connection, either you need an ethernet cable or a pre-tuned wireless usb that is made only for the xbox 360. and also, you would need a cable/dsl company that is accepted by xbox live. and then go to the xbox 360 dashboard, then, click "join membership",
Path #2:
setup an ethernet connection either directly, or with a router/hub, then go the system settings, and click, "computers" and then click connect. but this path way is only to create a connection to the computer.
