Thanks for such a great answer!

I bought this tv just shy of 2 years ago. Should this have been a problem so soon?

You guys rock! Both answers were very informative and helpful! I was able to return the tv for a full refund and am now looking for a better quality television.

    Hi Bill,

Thank you for the tips and hints! I was wondering what you thought about replacing the bad capacitors with 35v 1000microF capacitors? Is that increasing the voltage too much overboard from the 16v originals?

Also, do you (or anyone else) have any hints on getting the z3 zener diode out? It looks like it's under what looks like a heatsink - do I need to desolder the whole heatsink first?

There are 2 resistors off of the Z3 diode they are 10 ohm chips (100 on chip) these were also open.

You just had to buy the cheap one... These units have an all too common failure in the SMPS, (made in China) which is a MLT166A part number if you're buying the whole supply. But the SMPS can easily be removed in this unit and after you access it you'll find three 16v/1000mf caps that have failed EC18, EC19 & EC20, together with Z3 a 27v 1w zener diode... You can replace the caps with a 25v/1000mf if you order them to size. The higher voltage will provide a greater reliability...
If any or all that sounds too confusing you can simply replace the entire SMPS for just about $70.00 plus shipping. They're available at Fox International 888-498-7278 but don't be surprised if their temporarily out of stock and on backorder. Techs buy these things by the case because they are that common a failure.

Yes - and you're lucky it's lasted that long... I've seen some in that model and the Poloroid brand too that didn't last a year. I try and tell customers who are shopping for Tv's to run - don't walk - from any of the lower end stuff. You can bet money that category of Tv will see a major breakdown within three years.

If you want to save a few bucks on this repair and you think you can do it replace the caps with a higher voltage cap and it will last a bit longer next time. But the MLT166A (SMPS) is junk and any tech worth their salt will tell you the same thing...

The mlt169c appears to be a direct replacement for the original. I fixed on of these by simply replacing the caps. Previous to this it was flashing the red light just like yours. Anyway if ya wanna give up i'll buy it for 50 bucks :)

I did replace the 3 caps along with the Zener Diode Z3 that was shorted out. The caps were bulging at the top also. But as luck would have it I still have the same problem. Anymore suggestions.

Seeing that Fox International didn't answer the phone for me after 30 minutes on hold I looked up Megmeet and found the web page. It looks like the MLT166A isn't made anymore and I was wondering if the MLT169C is a direct replacement for it. Does anyone know?

How to get my garage door to open all the way?

Three blinking lights & door won't close by Candi
(Winston-Salem, NC)
Garage door will not open and close with remotes. Three blinking lights occur when we try to close door. What does this mean? It is a Linear unit.

I will assume you mean that your garage door will open with your remote but will not close. It should close if you press and hold the wall control button until the door is fully closed.

If that is the case, the 3 blinking lights indicate that your garage door's infrared safety beams are not properly aligned.

1) Check that the operator has power. The green lights on the sender and receiver should be lit.

2) If the receiver's green light is on, but the red light is off, the receiver has power but is not detecting the infrared beam from the sender. The red light might flash when the beam is partially detected. This can be caused by
mis-alignment or something blocking the beam.

Adjust the safety beam sender and receiver while watching the receiver's red light (stay out of the beam while aligning it). When the red light stays on, the beam is aligned and your garage door should operate normally.

NOTE: If the receiver's red light remains off, check for:

1) Dirt on the receiver's lens,

2) Sunlight shining into the receiver's lens,

3) A short in the safety beam wiring (from staples or at the operator terminals).

I have a daewoo pdh42L40 monitor and it does not turn on. The main power switch in the back works, but the little green light on the front does not light up so I can use my remote to turn on.

1. the infrared receiver may be defective and may need replacement.
This will require service from a qualified tech to replace.
2. or you may have a dead remote. check the batteries also in the remote.
