Thank you I would like to be around for the holidays. about how much would something like that cost. It's better to buy a new tv or to fix it.

I had the same problem after 2 years of use. The repair shop came out and replaced the digitizer board which took about 2 weeks to arrive after it was ordered. I don't know how expensive it was since the warranty was still in place but I would imagine somewhere in the $600 range.

I would suggest you think twice before spending on this. I now have had the TV six years and the convergence circuitry seems to be the cause of a problem where the picture is completely distorted for about 10 minutes after turning it on and then flutters at various rates for the remainder of the on time.

There is a fairly common problem with those symptoms. Try removing the srs-wow board, stand-up audio board next to the tuner. If the picture clears up it's likely QD01 on the srs-wow board loading down the scl & sda lines. QD01 is an Njm1136d Toshiba p/n# 23009142.

I didn't realize from your original post that the static noise was that loud... I am fairly certain that the srs-wow board couldn't do that - what you're describing sounds like a high voltage leak and not something that you want to take a screw driver too and go probing around.. You might find it that way, but it might be the last thing you do find on this earth...

If this is static is as loud as all that Tito get that unit into a ahop. They have both the equipment and experience to locate the problem and fix it without anyone getting killed...

All depends on what's found to cause the root problem.. For example, I've see coolant leaks cause the anode to find ground causing a static hissing... I've see HV splitters or the flyback transformer fail and cause this problem... It's really ging to be hard to tell but I would guess somewhere around the $500.00 dollar mark would be about average... That's based on my shop rates at $60.00 an hour and rough guessing at the parts...

    Good Luck!

PS: Take the unit to them, don't have them do the pick-up/delivery and you'll save a bundle.

The screen of my Toshiba projection TV model # 53HX71 has red and green shadows. How do I fix it? Can I do it myself? How much will it cost to fix?

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Below are more details for both items. Also, complete repair kits with instructions and repair support are avail from site such as

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

My Toshiba 53HX71 takes about 20 minutes to "warm"

This is a symptom of poor solder connections inside the set. The set will continue to deteriorate until it won't turn on at all. This is essentially a labor only repair and should not be to expensive for any TV service shop. Once this has been repaired, the set should work for many years to come.

These poor connections are caused by the continual heat/cool cycles because of use and is normal.

Most of the time the Hyper Board failing is the cause of this problem. It will eventually get worse where it also affects the HD ins. Unfortunately the Hyper Boards are no longer available from Toshiba and have not been available for quite some time. My suggestion is to coast with it and replace the Set when the HD ins fail.

You do not remove the screen on that TV. Doing so will mess up your convergence.
Chassis must be removed by a professional.

Toshiba 32A41 TV -- color problem

Toshibas are notorious for developing shorts in the inernal guns of the picture tube. In your case the green gun is shorted to G1. The noise you heard was an internal arc between the elements. It is unfortunate however, the repair of this problem usually requires the picture tube to be replaced. Sometimes a savvy technician with sencore picture tube rejuvenator can remove the short. This however usually does not last. Scrivitron

Do the wheels easily come off this unit?

They should just be standard casters on the bottom. The tough part is laying the TV on its side to remove them.
