JMB, your diagnosis is correct, you need a fluid change, you WILL need the service manual and even with it this is a formidable job for a lay person, not to say you can`t do it but it is a major job. manual can be purchased here by consumers. There are several steps that will speed up the job that are not listed in SM, And I strongly suggest when you get ready to purchase the fluid you DO NOT buy Philips fluid because the bacteria will come back again in several years, I purchase RCA`s fluid as it is cheaper and won`t cause the bacteria problem in the future. When you buy SM ask the parts person to send you a bottle or two of RCA or any other brand of fluid other than Philips. When you have the manual & fluid in hand get back on here before doing anything and I`ll give you some tips that will make this a LITTLE easier and faster, one more thing, which tube is cloudy Blue or Green? If you're NOT still under warrantee you should at least open the TV and look for a blown fuse near where the power cable enters the set. A lot of times you can buy replacement fuses at a local electronic or hardware store and they're easy to replace.
Check the fuse. If it is blown, it will be obvious and make sure that the set is unplugged before replacing it. If it blows again, or if it is not blown, your problem is probably in the 'X' volt regulator and you will need professional help with the repairs.

You can also check the board where the components are mounted and resoled any that look bad. Brief power outages may cause the TV to turn off on its own. If you are using a surge protector, try connecting the set directly to the wall outlet.

In your case it could caused by a blown fuse, a leaky diodes or a bad solder joint at the horizontal drive transformer.
All can be replaced at a local electronic or hardware store and they're easy to replace

If this does not correct the problem, you may need to have your TV serviced.

good luck!

Philips 46 in rear projection tv has too much green. The bulbs are good but adjusting the color does not help.

this models have coolent issues. I would tke off the front screen very carefully , as it may seperate , get a friend . Do not scrach the screen. then look down inside the units CRT's (Cathode Ray Tube) and see if its cloudy or fuzzy looking . While there look at the blue tube as well. If its fuzzy replace the coolent.

Change coolent in projction tv

This is not something the average user should try to accomplish. The old coolant needs to be disposed of properly. The CRT's and cooling chambers needs to be cleaned and then new cooling fluid needs to be placed in the TV. I recommend having a technician do this for you...

Replacing Coolent

I have the service manual, and it looks like this is a bit of a job. You also need a special coolant fluid, not water. Still, I can't think why this would need replacement unless it has leaked out or you were replacing the picture tube. Are you sure it's not a focus problem?

Directions on replacing coolent

  1. Must be careful, projection coolent must not get on circuit board. It will short out. You must have a pump to suck coolent out of tv. Use alot of towels to catch dripping fluid.
  2. first take off lense
  3. then take out drain plug
  4. suck out coolent, be sure to either raise tv up to level off or have towel out to capture all fluid lost.
5 then when all out, clean all parts with windex or glass cleaner.
6 check gasket if bad replace.

7 refill with new coolent, remember to fill all the way.
