If your motherboard is compatible with pentium and other processor, should you upgrade it to higher processor, then you must not change your motherboard. However, there are instances that you need to replace the whole thing except you have a MANLI motherboard that can be compatible with dual core, pentium
core2 duo and other processors according to its specifications.
Just check with the computer providers what best motherboard and processor suited for your use.

What type of motherboard do you have?
You will first need to get that information to find out what types of CPU's your motherboard will support before buying one that might not.

It is kind of a crapshoot given the info you provided. It actually depends on the motherboard you have currently and the specs of that board, and also the processor you want to upgrade to. There are many different methods to find out what kind of board you have, short of opening up the machine and looking at the model number printed on it. I personally would use belarc advisor, which will list the motherboard as main circuit board. You can get it for free here:http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html Run belarc, then do a google search on the specifications for that board. You should find a list of processor chipsets supported. If you post the make and model of the board i can help more.
If you can tell me the current processor's socket and model number. Also the motherboard make and model I can probably help you.
