Error messages

I have a compaq Armada v300 and the problem is I put in a new hard drive. but when I went to boot the laptop I got an error msg. "1782-disk controller failure. then it left from the screen to another with the error " non-system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready. when I do I keep getting the same error msg. I have looked and there is no floppy or cd in the laptop and I continue to get the same msg. I have even changed the boot seq. and still get the same two error messages. What can I do to stop the error msg. so that I can boot the laptop. I want to reimage it.
