I have an old Mazda 121 bubble car and for a while now its been making ahigh pitched whistling noise on startup. During winter however itsgotten much worse, to the point where my parents can still hear me 4streets away as it gets louder and louder until it's earsplitting andjust stops (this is aout 20-30 seconds later when I get the car movinga lot faster). I also find when I start it up after it's been driven,it's not nearly as bad (goes for 5 seconds, very quiet) I got a newtiming belt fitting in January, and when I turn the aircon on thewhistling starts again and wont stop at all.
I am going to take it to amechanic, but I'd rather have a good idea of whats wrong so I don't getfed any bull. Thanks!
Sounds like a fan belt problem if its burning that bad for that long it's likely to need to be replaced by now. Tightened the same day it started may have saved the belt

yes could very well be an exhaust leak.but that should be kinda loud and annoying..also u could have a slight whistling sound coming from ur air intake hose coming from air cleaner box to ur intake or throttle body or ur air inlet goin to the motor. when the motor is accelerated it would produce a high pitch sound like a whistling .hope this can help
some high pitch whistles can be from the brushes of the alternator needing attention
it may be from failing idler pulley bearings
check for vacuum leaks at hose connections
The whistling is possibly the alternator belt loading to charge the battery, listen to the noise and turn on the rear heated screen and headlight, if the pitch of the whistle changes then it's the alternator belt. Hope that helps.
Yes, all manuals with clutches have a clutch release bearing, or throw-out bearing as used to be called. If old or worn or bad, they can make a whistling noise or high pitched squeal.
The symptoms sound like a loose fan belt to me. That is normally described as a screech instead of a whistle but everything else matches.
This should not be hard to fix your self. Also a mechanic should be able to do it in 10 minutes including chatting to you.
If it is a fan belt your mechanic will know the sound 4 streets away too :)
For a short term fix and to prove if this really is the problem you can get your self something called "Belt Grip" It is in a spray on can. Follow the instructions on the can and if it fixed the problem you have the cause. Either get someone else to tighten your belt up or figure out how it's done. Basicaly you just loosen an adjusting bolt normally on the alternator and slide it out a little bit on it's track then tighten it up again.
hi ,,two things 1- water pump. but most likely check your pulleys they will make that high pitch noise one of them fixing to go bad and what will happen the belt will jam and jump lose and will lose all power ,,cause you have one belt for alt and the water pump mostly its the pulley right under the alt ,,hope this will help ....Joe
There may be a small hole or cut in a vacum line or possibly just loose. Also make sure the air filter box and the big hose to it are secure and clamps etc are tight. Pulleys and belts can make a high pitch sound also.
