Question about Acer Aspire 5050-3242 Notebook

Acer Aspire 5050 won't power on

When attempting to power on the unit, regardless of whether the battery is in or not, the HDD light will come on momentarily and all fans will power up, then all noise from the fans will stop and the light goes off. The light on the power button stays on, but nothing happens and no picture ever comes up. I tried unplugging the power cord and removing the battery and pushing the power button to drain the power in the laptop, but still no success. The unit worked as recently as last night, only to wake up this morning and find it not working.

How exactly do I check that? I'm not sure exactly what part you are referring to.

  • monkeyhead Dec 02, 2007

That's not it, the battery has power and the AC pack charges it. I know this because I can turn the computer on on battery power only and it does the same thing with the lights and fans even if I leave it on for 20 minutes like that. Also, the AC adapter being plugged in causes the charging lights to light up.

Well now the light on the front of the laptop that is usually green while being charged is orange. The symptoms are the exact same and the laptop still does the same half ass power on when on AC power only. I'm not really confident enough in my laptop tinkering abilities to remove and reseat the ram without some help on how to do that. I'm more of a pc tech than with laptops.

my daughters 6 month old acer aspire 5050 will not turn on, no lights no noise. tried the reset procedure (take out battery hold power button ect.) it had no effect

I have the same problem with my computer. I took it to get fixed and my computer specialist says that the screen needed to be replaced, that the light was bad. And you have to replace the whole screen, not just a bulb. $200 later, the problem was still there. He then said it was a wire that was bent that goes from the computer to the screen. Another $15-$20 part. Still waiting on my laptop, this thing is costing way too much, for just a couple more hundred dollars, I could but a whole new laptop. Geeze

If anyone is still having symptoms, I have the reason behind the problem. Acer uses a power input jack made of mostly plastic with a sheath of aluminum around it. This sheath has 2 main functions first is to solder it in place on the board, the second is to provide grounding. This very delicate little box made of mostly plastic has a little center node that is broken off if the laptop is drop hard enough, usually 2 feet or more. This center node provides one side of the polarity of electricity in order to power on the laptop. Upon breakage it slips back into the laptop never to interface with the powercord again, thus no charging. I would suggest everyone to look in the hole of their power input jack and you will probably see yellow plastic surrounding a silver post that is dangling in a weird fashion.

Dewayne5 is right...Almost 5 years after and now I can see the Yellow HARD PLASTIC rectanle is soldered off and cracked...I re-soldered it and it worked, but for the sake of it, I ordered the new part (part # DA0ZR1PB6D1) of Ebay for under $6.00 including shipping and everything:D...

If the power's all good try re-seating the ram, or replacing it altogether. You might try removing the battery and power adapter and then pushing the power button, that should clear residual power on the motherboard- and might reset the acer completely. If that does not work it might be a sign of another problem.

Check your power pack for voltage. if that dont work then your battery could be drained.

its the part (tip) that goes into the dc port on your computer

I would then suggest changing out the Battery charger printed circuit board. It seems that the board doesnt know to which source to get the power from.

Black screen / HD light steady and the fan keeps running

Ok, check your RAM, reseat or clean it with soft eraser, only its edge connector both side. Do this when unit is off and no other power source is connected to it even its battery.

Hope this help.

Acer aspire 5050 can't turn it on

If you dont see any green lights and you dont hear any boot up sounds ( hd, fans, etc) try to take out battery and just plug in the AC adapter to a known good power outlet. Make sure your power plug is good too. If you hear boot-up sounds, see green lights but no display then toggle on the "fn" key and or try on an external monitor.

Usb port on Acer aspire 5050

Be safe rather than sorry, get yourself a Powered USB Hub.

One of the problems with USB is that a device is only allowed to draw up to 500mA of power (100mA on first connection). So, if you buy a non-powered hub, it will only support one high-power (500mA) peripheral, and the other ports on that hub may be useless. Plug a mixture of devices into a non-powered hub and some might work while others might not. Since people expect to be able to plug any USB device into any USB port, I think this is really bad. Using a powered USB hub generally eliminates the problem.
