95 GMC 5.7L Sierra Engine runs great. Starts on first hit. But...late
last year it started stalling while driving. Just die. Turn key, it
would eventually restart, until one day...nothing. I determined it was
the key and ignition switch, the key had mega play in switch. So I
replaced it and it started right up (even after sitting all winter (my
hands don't allow me to work in cold weather anymore)) Put new battery
in it. Ran great for 4 weeks. Would stall once a week, but no problem
restarting. Then the starter went out (it was free spinning), so I
just replaced that. Turns over great. Now the original problem is
bad, turn the key to the 'on' position and it does not power the
gauges...no power. If I can play with it and get the gauges to power
and turn to start it, it does fire and then dies, including gauges.
It's appears to not be getting any power from the battery to stay
running. Battery is good, new truck battery, good CCA. I do have
power to the radio and fan, but not to gauges, thus truck. Any ideas
on where to check next? Pretty handy and also have volt meter. Any
ideas at all....I can't break it anymore than it is. Hate to take it
in, last time it cost me more than the truck is worth, esp nowadays.
Thanks, Mary
Check the condition and check for power at the actual ignition switch at the bottom of steering column and the rod from the key switch that engages it. if your lucky the switch may just have come loose, but more often then not, there shot.
Sounds like an alternator problem. Pull it of the truck and take it to a parts store and have them test it for u. Its free at most parts stores. while your at it replace all power cabels and grounds the trucks old new cabels and connections cant hurt. Side post batteries have a bad habit of ratiling lose connections. hope this helps and good luck.
did you check all the fusable links sometimes they dont break all the way maybee check all the grounds on the truck there is one on the back of the head and should be a comp. ground and of course the engine ground from bat. sometimes you have to losen them and retighten to establish a new clean ground

I had the exact problem with my 1993 chevy c1500. I found that the IAC was sticking so the engine would die at idle after warming up and the ignition module was pulsing the ECM intermittently after the engine warmed up so the fuel pump wasn't being turned on after the engine died....I replaced the ignition module and the IAC valve and all is good. I don't know if testing the ignition module reveals that it isn't sending pulses to the ECM.
Check the starter it could a bad cross over or the teeth on the catch wheel (or what ever it is called) could be broken and by attempting to start it you are bypassing the broken teeth and it will catch allowing the vehicle to start. Also just to be thorough double check the electrical from the batt to the alt, ignition switch and the starter.
