5400 is an internal temperature error that usually shows up when the main logic board goes bad. The price to replace it is probably more than a new printer.

5400 is a temperature error that points to a new logic pcb, but the other day I had one that was caused by a bad printhead. If you can get it out, try powering up without the printhead installed, if it's bad, the error will change to no printhead and you can just pick up a new one.
the 5400 error is telling you there was excessive temperature in the
printhead, and this error code will stop all printing attempts.
Unplug
the power from the printer and leave it off for a hour and then check
the pins inside the carriage and clean them and clean the contacts on
the back of the head.

My 5400 2 scanner worked well with windows XP but will not start with my new computer WINDOWS VISTA.
