It was running great - first pull type of a thing for years, even now - then I had it going for ~5 minutes, edging, and it just died. Now, every pull will start it for literally one second (strong, first pull) then it stalls immediately - repeatedly. Good gas, cleaned plug (not new), clamped closed the plug wire connector a bit to secure it onto the plug, air filter is not too, too dirty.
Cleaning the plug doesnt mean the plug may not be fouling out. It is usually the easiest and cheapest resort, rule it out by installing new one. Take the air filter out while you try to run it also,if it isnt either of those I would look into having the carburetor cleaned and checked.

You need to check the ignition coil, by running until it quits and then remove the spark plug, reattach the plug wire and then ground the plug threads to the block and then try to start it. If you get no spark or very weak spark, the coil is bad and needs to be replaced.
pull the head completely off and make sure that the shaft is not broken, if not then line it back into the head slot and put back together and test it out, Tim
one of two things pull the fuse for one or two will key around in ignition cause sometimes ignitions do get stuck on the on position. Mine does. Or three some trucks have fans that stay on for about 5 to ten minutes to help cool engine even after engine off. Note the time. If it dont go off in 5 to ten minutes try the key thing if no success there pull the fuse.
The jet in the carburetor is clogged if it is a 4 cycle unit or the diaphragms are stiff if in a 2 cycle unit. It is burning the primed fuel but can not draw any more fuel to burn to stay running. HTH Good Day
yes, there is a spark module, but it's highly unlikely that two would have a bad module - more than likely, it is your gas mix. it must be fresh for the engine to run. the gas we have today will go bad in about a month and a half. if you happen to live in an area that has E85, forget it. small engines will not run very long, if at all on this junk. in some areas, you can get gas without alcohol, but it can only be used for lawn & garden equipment. it's expensive, but your engines will run
Hi Tom. You are not doing anything wrong. That being said, your edger has a slightly gummed up carbeurator. I would go to an auto parts store and get a can of a product called seafoam. this is a gasoline additive. Add one ounce per gallon of gas and use this as the fuel for your edger. You will solve your problem in just a few minutes after using this product, I believe. Give it a try and let me know.
it sounds like the the carb. either it needs cleaned of the float inside isnt working i would say to just get a new carb. if its possible concidering the age but try to clean the filter first im sure it has one sry but thats all i can think of
There are two starting procedures - initial starting after long storage or running out of gas calls for squeezing the bulb (note - squeezing the sides together - not pressing the bulb in) 6 times, poulling cord up to 10 tiimes, rapid pull. If that doesn;'t work, wait 15 minutes, do not press bulb, but pull cord 10 times again.
Normal starting after first use and w/gas in the tank calls for 2 presses of the bulb.
I found that I was not priming the engine well, but also it should not be as much of a pain as it is. I still am successful in starting on every third attempted use, get frustrated and say %*&% it most of the time. These things are made by MTD (for Troy-Bilt) and that, in my experience, stands for Machine Typically Dead.
