Ok, but how much memory can I add? Currently have the standard 512. Do I add another 512, or replace the current with a 1 gig?

WHAT YOU DO IS REMOVE THE SCREWS ON THE COVER WHERE MEMORY IS. INSERT THE MEMORY, BE SURE THAT ITS IN THERE CORRECTLY. THEN BOOT THE MACHINE UP. CLICK THE START BUTTON ON BOTTOM OF SCREEN AND GO TO MY COMPUTER, RIGHT CLICK GO TO PROPERTIES. THEN ADVANCED, WHERE IT SAYS PERFORMANCE CLICK SETTINGS. THEN ADVANCED, VIRTUAL MEMORY CLICK CHANGE. THEN CLICK SYSTEM MANAGE SIZE. SET. THEN PRESS OKAY. AND RESTART THE MACHINE.

hi
the one working stick of memory needs to be put into the first memory bank.these are normally 2 coloured different to the other 2.make sure they are securely in place. plastic clips lock into memory stick.once done while power lead is removed turn on at tower.this will clear memory.plug back in and give it a try,if ok add another stick of memory although you said the other three sticks don't work give it a try they may work and save you a fortune.

I am thinking of adding memory to my Compaq Presario SR111ONX. I was looking for a schematic of the motherboard or a diagram showing the memory slots and how to add it.

Two long slots with tabs on each end... the hold the memory sticks vertical to the board.

Use your finger to gently move the tab away from the memory stick on both sides... after each tab has been moved away pull up firmly on the memory stick...note the position of the slot(s) on the side of the stick that goes into the slot. insert the replacement memory stick in the slot lining it up carefully and push down ... the tabs should go back into place on their own if the memory is seated properly.

Gateway desktop fx 7026 memory issue, has 4 slots came with( 2 )2 gb sticks = 4 gigs it came with. when i add 2 extra gig it doesnt recognize.

the specs i read says 8 gig is the max. here is what it says for RAM
RAM
  • Installed Size 4.0 GB / 8.0 GB (max)
  • Technology DDR2 SDRAM
  • Memory Speed 667.0 MHz
  • Form Factor DIMM 240-pin
  • Features Dual channel memory architecture
  • Configuration Features 2 x 2 GB

check to make sure you have added the right type of memory. also look at your user manual. it should tell you where and how to place the added sticks. sometimes they have to be added in pairs or have to be in specific slots. also if you dont have the manual it is on the gateway site. you should type in your model and serial number and get all the info you need.

Trying to put new hard drive.when it starts up it beeps 3 times and no picture on the monitor.is the power supply bad? originaly the hard drive crashed and the trying to reinstall it kept coming up error...

3 short beeps is a base 64K RAM failure

Remove added memory
If you've recently added or tried to add additional memory to the computer and have started getting these beeps. Remove all new memory you've added to the computer. If the computer works fine after removing the new memory you're encountering either an incompatibility or defective new memory.
  • Additional information about determining the type of memory to use in a memory upgrade can be found on document CH000910.
Open computer and reseat memory
Sometimes when the computer is moved and/or over time a memory stick can become loose causing the computer to be unable to read the memory or get errors as it's reading it. Try fixing this issue by opening the computer removing each of the memory sticks you have in the computer and then placing them back into the computer.
Swap memory location
If reseating the memory did not resolve the issue try swapping the location of the memory. If you have only one stick of memory in the computer try moving it to another slot and then boot the computer.
If you have more than one stick of memory try removing all but one stick of memory and boot the computer. If this does not resolve the issue try removing that stick of memory and try one of the other sticks of memory.
Try another computers memory
If you have access to another computer that uses the same type of memory try using its known good memory in your computer.
If another computers memory works you know that you have bad memory. If another computers memory does not work and it is compatible with your computer unfortunately your motherboard and/or the slots on the motherboard are defective causing it to be unable to properly read the memory, which means the motherboard will have to be replaced.
Replace memory
If you've determined or believe that the memory in y our computer is bad we suggest that you replace it.

Adding more memory

Yes and no. Depends on the motherboard and the type of memory. On some boards you have to add memory in pairs, others you can add one stick, then there's parity, etc, etc. Check the memory that's on the board, check the manual to see how it recommends you upgrade memory. One wrong stick can turn your new CPU into a nice end table.

Let us know what you find out.

PC turns on then quickly turns off

Does it boot fine if you remove the memory you just added? If it does then try switching the memory that was in it before with the memory you just added. You want to first determine if the ram you bought is bad or incompatible.
