Problem for LG RC199H DVD Recorder / VCR Combo

Does not read any discs

AFter almost a year of having this product, it can no longer read disks (Cds or DVDs). I tried unplugging it and plugging it in again. I've tried resetting the factory defaults. I also (thanks to some hacking tips on the web) reset my region codes to its default. But the discs are not being read. What do I do?

- Falling Down - Thanks for your help but your Best Solution did not work. After the recommended cleaning, I watched as the machine attempted to read the CD I had inserted. The CD started spinning. Then, the laser apparatus moved from the end of the CD to the center and back to the end. All in about 1 second, the CD stopped spinning. What could be the problem? Is the cheapest solution to get a new and reliable DVD recorder?

-   I have the exact same problem! What an unreliable prouct this is! I must assume that the manufacturer is aware of this problem, and am disappointed in a complete lack of loyalty to their customers...What ever happened to standing behind your proucts and "making it right?" James Rubin-   jnerve

-   my LG rc199h also had the same problem...cleaning the laser assembly will not work because it has nothing to do with the laser assembly. I went to the extreme of buying a new laser assembly and the new one did the same thing. It will not spin up a disc and that is a problem with the voltage capacitors on the power supply circut.
i also had a panasonic dvd player that did the same thing and it's problem also was the voltage capacitors. seems as if our outsourcing to China has caused us even more money in OUR pocket. i replaced these capacitors and the unit seems to work just fine! -   benderbot

-   Well I guess I'm lucky! Mine lasted almost 3 years before it went TU.

Bought a known broke unit off eBay for $20 with free shipping, thinking it was the DVD drive and the other one does the exact same thing.

I like my LG phone, but it'll be a Sony or some other brand that replaces the RC199H. -   Skybill9

-   I have same problem - approx 1yr use and no longer reads dvd disk - dont wast your time and money like me on a cleaning disk - or take it apart to really clean the unit - it wont work. -   Guest

-   I actually have 2 LG DVD players; this one and another home theater unit. They both lasted about a year and now neither one will read a DVD or CD. I tried a cleaning disk on both. I just opened and cleaned the home theater one and it appears move properly, and read the header on one disk- but won't play anything....now I'm going to try and clean this one and came here to see if anyone else was having problems. It may be time to get a new system - likely not an LG though.-   Guest

the head transport mechanism on some of these units slides on a set of metal tubes usually with teflon slides. Sometimes they stick and the head won't move. dust or solidified grease usually does this. Sometimes dust accumulates on the laser itself and the output dims. Only way to know is to disassemble and clean these parts. Be very careful as the head can be knocked off its focus point easily, use only alcohol and q-tips carefully.

Just started having the same problem and found this site off of Google search. Doesnt look very encouraging. Did anyone get anything to work for the 'not reading any discs' problem? The VHS side still works just fine. Other than that its one step from the trash can I guess? Thanks all,

Shawn

I have the same problem. Before my one year warranty ran out I sent it back to LG. They replaced the DVD for $70.00 and it worked fine for about another 6 months. I contacted them again and they said I only had a 90 day warranty. This product stinks and LG stinks! They do not stand by their product because they know it stinks as well. I purchased this from Best Buy and they should be ashamed of selling LG products as well. I will never buy an LG product again. People should be aware of the junk that LG is selling.

Have had the same problem. SOLUTION: Never Buy any products from LG ever again -- it worked a total of 9X and then crapped out. LG is off my list -- Panasonic is my Huckle-berry now.

After a year and little use, it won't recognize ANY cd or DVD. I tried a DVD/CD cleaning disc and it won't read it either so it won't spin. This thing really is a piece of junk. I paid aver $200 for it and would like to get my money back. Any chance, do you think, LG would do that? ....or even exchange for another one? With all the complaints, it's obviously a lemon.

Mine is about two years old with basically the same problem; the unit failed after about a year. It rarely reads any commericial DVDs. One day when I had a few hours to waste, I loaded and unloaded a commerical DVD several times, and it eventually read it. This made me think it was something with the alignment of the tray, or it was a dirty. However, more often, it will read a DVD burned on the unit. This makes me think there is something wrong with the onboard computer brain.

Has anyone started a class action lawsuit against LG to recover the cost of this inept machine?

LG RC199H, just over a year old, gradually had more and more problems reading DVDs until now: "Unknown disc, please check disc again".

I tried the solution of cleaning (with alchohol and q-tip) and re-greasing (with lithium grease) the rails but it didn't make any change. I also tried cleaning the lens with a Q-tip and alchohol, but still no change.

Before I gave up, I tried loading a retail DVD with the DVD-drive cover off so I could watch what was happening. After the tray pulled the disc in, I lightly pressed on the center of the disc to make sure it was locked in place, then it started spinning. The laser carage seemed to slide back and forth with ease and I could see the laser going in and out of focus at several places on the disc starting with where the TOC is (I could see this through the disc). Then it gave the same message: "Unknown disc, please check disc again", and spat the disc, still spinning, out over the top of the machine (since the cover was still off), which scratched it up pretty badly.

(it's ok, it was Black Christmas)

The machine will not play any DVD's with one exception - it will play a newly created DVD immediately after recording and finalizing a DVD from a VHS tape. The machine also makes a very annoying churning noice for a few minutes every time it is turned on.

This FRAUD crapped out on me late August,10 months with less than 20 dvd plays.By then it was labor cost.Rails ,LENS cleaned.NO change.

RC199H about 1 yr old. Plays CD's fine..will not read any DVD's. Only been used about 20 times in the year. LG sucks. Did the reset thing several times, no luck. Next step is to open the thing up.

Never used for anything other than playing DVD movies - never really used any of the nice features this unit offered. Now the unit won't read any disc.
I even tried inputting new discs (DVD +R) and initialization won't even work so I can transfer some of my VCRs to DVD. Even tried to reinitialize the DVD RW furnished with the unit and it isn't recognized either.

Player just stop reading DVD's. Unpluged and pluged back in. Reset to Factory settings. The player will either open and trying to read or will say no Disc in the system.

unknown disc errors---NO DVD WORKS

Comment by Guest, posted on Dec 05, 2007

To any disk says, "Unrecognized disk..." No matter what I did (restarting, unplugging, etc) it wouldn't read disks.
