Dell Inspiron 6400 Battery not charging

By fourklahrs on Aug 15, 2009

I've had my laptop for almost 3 years. As time went on, when not plugged in, the battery lasted for shorter and shorter periods of time. A few months ago I was using it and had to unplug it, but didn't shut it down (I was going to plug it in across the room, which was a large room.) Before I got to the other side and plugged it in, it died completely. The orange battery light began blinking when I did plug it in.

So I resolved to the fact that the battery was dead and I could only ever use the computer when it was plugged in. I didn't want to spend a few hundred on a new one.

But recently I was shopping on Amazon and realized I could get a new battery for around $50. So I did. It arrived today. I placed the new battery in and the battery light began blinking - alternating green then orange. The power meeter was at 33% when I put it in and it hasn't changed after 8 hours.

Is this not a good battery or should I get a new charger, and is there a way for me to know for sure?

Thanks!

It is more then likely a battery problem I'm affraid! Some folk will pass on 2nd hand batteries which are faulty on ebay. The chargers very rarely go wrong, but because there usually a sealed unit the only sure fire way to eliminate the charger from the problem is to test it on another computer or appliance with the same power socket, or possibly test it with a multimeter and make sure the correct voltage is being passed through. It may be a good idea to take the computer with both batteries to a local computer store to see if they can test them both and the charger, to doubley make sure. Some places will often do this for free.

My dell inspiron 6400 battery is not charging. The power meter shows that the laptop is pluged to AC power, but the battery is not charging. I have also noticed that the battery charging led light is not working only but the power light. The meter shows that the battery has a 7% on it with a red cross sign. The laptop is 2 years old and never had issues with the battery. It has always been good. It is also made in Japan, and not one of the recall batteries that Dell has recalled.
