Usually the pilot goes out because of a faulty flame sensor or wire connection.

Theres a thermostat inside, if its too cold and not warming up the thermostat enough it will shut off because it thinks there is a problem.

Jim, it sounds like a gas pressure problem coming to the heater itself. Be sure the gas line shut off valve at or near the appliance is turned all the way ON. Also, check the air intake shutter on the burner to be sure it's not clogged. If it is, vacuum it out with a vacuum that has a hose and a crevice tool attachment.

One other thing to trouble shoot. Trace the wire from the thermocouple at the pilot, back to the control valve. It will be connected with a nut, Try loosening the nut with your fingers. If you can turn it, it's too loose. Finger tighten it and with the appropriately sized open end wrench, turn it only a quarter of a turn more.

Let me know how it works out for you.

My name is Larry and I have an older model Vanguard natural gas wall heater. Igniter works and pilot lights, but pilot will not stay lit no matter how long I keep the control pushed down. As soon as I...

The part is ordered by Model number, a serial number is no help, and yes there is a part called the flame sensor that allows the gas to stay on, I am sure if you contact a local supplier they can provide a suitable substitute gas valve or sensor if it is a stand alone part, on most the sensor is part of the gas valve. I think you will end up having a local shop try and match up the valve.

I have a rheem fury 50gal gas water heater that will not stay on. I have replaced the thermo couple, it did lite but then went out.

I would like to know how old this heater is. This information can be found on either model or serial numbers. It won't appear obvious but last six numbers will tell you. You have already changed thermo-couple so I would check to see that it's properly centered in pilot flame. When you light it hold pilot button down for two-three mins.while watching thermo-couple.It should be a nice cherry red. If it is and pilot goes out after you release button then you either have another bad thermo-couple or gas valve is bad.If it does not get cherry red at least on tip then you need to reposition thermo-couple and try again. If gas valve is bad and heater is less then six years old valve will be covered under warrenty, however labor won't typically be covered unless you have extened service contract.Hope this helps.Thanks.

Burner keeps going out

It might be the ODS Pilot Assembly. It could be clogged with dust or lint.
It might be low gas pressure.
It could also be the pressure regulator.

My 1.5 yr old gas water heater has a pilot light problem

YOUR WATER HEATER HAS WHAT IS CALLED A STANDING PILOT-STAYS LIT ALWAYS WHEN THE PILOT GOES OUT YOU LOOSE EVERYTHING. YOU HAVE TO REPLACE THE THERMOCOUPLE WHICH KEEP THE PILOT LIT. ONCE THE PILOT IS LIT THE THERMOCOUPLE SENDS IN MILLIVOLTS TO THE BURNER TO SAY ITS READY FOR BURNING
IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILURE WITH THIS REPLACEMENT PLEASE FIND SOME ONE WHO CAN. IT IS NOT HARD TO DO ASK A NABOR OR FRIENDS SOME HAS TO KNOW HOW. SERVICE COMPANYS ARE OUT FOR THE MONEY FOR A 10 MINUTE JOB
