I got my nuvi 660 +- 9 months ago. Used previous notebook to install maps from CD to nuvi. Worked OK for 9 months. Then message of waypoint full and no more routing from nuvi. Then performed maintenance and cleared waypoints. When switched on now message of can't unlock maps. From this I tried to re-install the maps from the CD that came with the unit with the SD 11007 GARMAP Version 1 in unit.

With install from the CD hit the problem as explained with removeable disk. Message is selected drive is not a valid map data card

I also want to state that I am not the most Computer Illerate guy around. Maybe I am doing something "stupid" among the way I am approaching this problem.

But the vuvi worked !00% before hitting the waypoint full and I have all the ligitamive maps for South Africa and was very happy the way the unit worked. I put the CD in drive E and run install. In my computer Drive G comes up as the nuvi. Drive H comes up as the SD card where the maps will be stored.

About the only positive is the bluetooth still working.

I did the webupdater from Garmin's website but still the same problem with not a valid map data card.

  • HannesM Dec 12, 2007

I now downloaded the latest software from Garmin and then also formated the SD card in the nuvi 660. Problem still the same, removable drive not a valid data card.

You can still download updates. Get the Webupdater program from Garmin's website and install it. Plug the GPS in via USB cable and run it. It will find the updates and you can install anything that's available. Let me know if ya get it back up.

Hi if it is saying problem with removalbe drive G this will mean their is either problem with the lead.
If this is not the case then it is either your usb port or the unit itself you might find that the prot works fine but the computer is not recognising the sat nav.
have you installed this disk that came with the satnav on your comp this might be the problem try opening this programme before you plug satnav in.
The only other thing you could try is plugging it back in do you leave the satnav off whilst it is plugged into your comp.
When it is plugged in try using the tool search for new hardware run this file when it has finished look on the list and the satnav should be in this list.
If it is then you will need the disk that cam with the satnav select satnav from the list then select have disk put the disk in and try reinstalling the software that came with the satnav.
Are you sure that the port is working properly that you are trying to use.
Let me know how you get on ok

Hi your trying to put the data onto the sd card then have you got enough space on your card to put the data on also is the data on the card compatible with the data you are trying to put on if they are stored in different format then you will have trouble istalling them.

What is allready on the sd card is this info that you need on their or are you trying to write over the data on the card with new data

  • paul proctor Dec 01, 2007

I think your problem is probably a format problem if you dont need anything that is already on the card try formatting it first this should allow the drive to recognise the card

If you still have problems have you tried formating the data card and reinstalling all the data again failing this then the chances are the data card has became damaged let me know how you get on ok

My nuvi 660 turns on but displays "loading maps"

The problem is that the nuvi 660 gps receiver is jammed and needs to be reformatted.
What you have to do is to disconnect the gps, and connect it to a computer, then format it.

After formatting it, you download the self extracting archive files for your nuvi on to your hard drive, then connect your nuvi to a free USB port on your PC interface cable and allow your nuvi to initialize and enter USB mode, Unzip the files by running the downloaded executable files, then follow the instruction provided by the launched update application on your PC.

Then install it back in your car and turn it on, it will work once again.

Take care and good luck
i hope this helps?

I need to install map update 2009 data card

If the map is on a SD card, just plug it into the SD slot on the side of your Nuvi with the power OFF. Then turn on your Nuvi and at the main menu, press the wrench symbol, then the map icon and then "map info". Uncheck your old 2008 map and check your 2009 map and you should be ready to go.

Add Europe sd card to Garmin 660

No. When you plug in the SD card, the Nuvi will load the map from your SD card. Once you get to the main menu, select the wrench symbol, then the map symbol and then "map info". You should see both the US and Europe map. Make sure the Europe map is checked. You can uncheck the US map. This is how you switch between maps. The reason why you have to have the extra map on the SD card is because the Nuvi can only have one map on it's internal drive, one at a time.

However, backing up your US map is a good idea.

Good luck,

Memory full is being displayed when i try to go to a new destination and when i try to delete a favourite the unit turns off.

Garmin nuvi 610 T
memory full was being displayed on screen whilst on destination ,sometimes followed by route waypoint memory full .

I found by turning unit off , then holding finger on top left of screen ,and at the same time turning back on again the unit would go into maintenance mode.
Follow prompts on screen to reset waypoint memory.
Mine works as good as gold now, hope this helps!

Nuvi 660 -- Loading Supplemental Maps

The best price I could find in the US for the
Euope maps was about $230 -on the internet - normal retail is $299. You have to buy and use it off the SD card, so depending on how long your trip is it might be more practical renting one, unless you want to try selling the SD card after you return.

Says memory full and will not work

Hi dogman33, This is a common problem with the nuvi 660s with older firmware. Garmin's solution is to perform a "hard reset" and to upgrade the device firmware. Upgrading firmware is an easy procedure, just visit Garmin's website ( and download the software called WebUpdater. Run that and follow its directions. Here is how you can perform a hard reset to clear all your waypoint memory: MAINTENANCE MODE: Step 1. Turn your Nuvi unit off, remove any SD cards from the SD card slot and make sure that the unit is not plugged into any computer. Step 2. Place a fingertip on the upper left hand corner of the touch screen and keep it there while turning the unit on, a prompt should read " Do you really want to start in maintenance mode?" Step 3. Select the yes button. Step 4. Enter your PIN if enabled. Step 5. Main Maintenance Mode screen should have 4 selections: System information View Diagnostics Clear User data Clear Waypoints Step 6. Choose "Clear Waypoints". After some time the unit should reboot. Hope this is helpful! spydee
