How to adjust or change a monitor's refresh rate.

If you've ever used a CRT monitor, you know that fine-tuning your refresh rate is essential. The refresh rate of a display is measured in Hertz (abbreviated Hz) and specifies the number of times per second that a display is illuminated.

Setting the refresh rate to 60 Hz - a common default value - tells the monitor to redraw itself 60 times per second. For most people, that setting on a CRT monitor is too slow, resulting in an annoying flicker that can cause headaches, eyestrain, and fatigue. Bumping the refresh rate to a higher number can reduce that flicker, as long as the monitor itself can handle the faster rate.

If you're using an LCD monitor then a safe refresh rate lies in the 60Hz-75Hz range. A greater refresh rate when it comes to LCD's means greater performance.

How to adjust the refresh rate
Firstly you will need to right click on your desktop background and select Properties.

This will display the Display Properties window as show below.

You will need to click the Settings tab.

Once in the Settings tab you will need to click on the Advanced button.

Then click on the Monitor tab.

Here you can change the screen's refresh rate. Make sure the box next to Hide modes that this monitor cannot display is ticked. After you have selected the refresh rate you wish click OK. It would be a very good idea if you have the user's manual for the monitor handy just so that you can see what the manufacturer suggests the refresh rate should be set to.

My monitor compaq model MV520 is always blinking every time I open my computer, How can I fix it?.

Good morning, afternoon, evening or night; whatever time of day you are viewing this solution post. Thank you for choosing FixYa to answer and solve your problem. Your Compaq MV520 Monitor is always blinking every time you turn on your computer and you want to know how you can fix it? First, we need to troubleshoot the problem. I'm thinking you probably need to refresh the flicker rate on your monitor. The flicker rate is probably set on a low setting, which is causing you screen to blink (flicker). This can be bad for your health as well because it can cause eyestrain and headaches. Your monitor is a CRT (Cathode-Ray Tube) model. These types of monitors can cause a lot of screen flickering. Now that we've troubleshooted the problem, now it's time to solve the problem. There are two ways you can solve this problem. You can either refresh the flicker rate or you can buy an LCD monitor. LCD monitors flicker-free. My suggestion is that you refresh the screen flicker rate. To refresh the flicker rate, go into your System Preferences or Control Panel, click your operating system's appearance and display link and click your screen adjustment link. You may have to click your advanced settings link. Click your monitor tab and from there adjust you screen refresh rate. You may have to adjust your screen resolution before you refresh the screen rate. If you have to do this, make sure the screen resolution you choose supports you monitor's height and width as well as visibility. The higher the resolution, the higher the screen rate. The instructions I'm giving you may sound like this because I'm not sure what your operating system is. I'm not to familiar with Mac Operating Systems, but if you have a Windows Operating System and you need better detailed instructions, just reply back. I hope this decreases your screen flickering and gives you a better viewing experience.

My Dell Latitude C400 PC Notebook screen flickers very fast, any ideas? thanks

It can depend on what kind of flickering you are seeing. A very very fast one, that shows more obvious if you look to the side of your screen (instead of directly at it as normal), means your screens 'refresh rate' is most likely wrong.
That's the most likely problem you have, as the inverter will usualy only make a screen flash, not flicker, though they don't usually flash too much before the bulb or inverter can't take the strain and breaks properly.
Sometimes a screens circuit can go slightly faulty (very rare) and cause a slight change in its refresh cycle, and that can cause a high speed flickering too, usually accompanied with a very slight blurring of any images.
The standard setting for a C400 is 1024 x 768 resolution at 60 Hertz, so check your display properties to see that's not been accidentally changed.

Screen flickers with lines but when i move the screen it stops

Hi,

A nearby device can cause stray magnetic fields that will cause the display to be affected. A problem inside the monitor will cause the display to have problems. If somebody turns on their monitor nearby, the monitor's degaussing when it starts up will cause your monitor to dance wildly for a moment or two.

keep electronics away from your computer. Mobie phones etc. can distort the image shown on the screen for periods of time, usually when a text or call is coming through.

Sometimes if the refresh rate isnt set high enough you will see a noticeable flicker on the screen .. to change the monitor refresh rate .. you can right click on the desktop and then left click on properties .. click on the setting tab then click on the advanced tab then click on the monitor tab ..look in the drop down menu where it says 60 hertz and see if the refresh rate can be changed .. if it cant .. uncheck hide modes the monitor cant see and then click on the drop down menu .. pick a refresh rate .. 75 hertz is what i use and it should stop the flicker

Refresh rate for this monitor. Prefs. offer 60 or

Go for the highest your video card will allow to remove any flicker from the screen, or the max whichever works best.

I also have a Viewsonic Flatscreen, they are great and I had two Viewsonic CRTs before that.

New monitor flickers when hooked to computer

Hi!

There's a few usual culprits for this problem.

  1. Check the cable. Swap to a different cable if possible to rule that out.
  2. Check the refresh rate of your monitor. Most monitors have options for this via a Menu button on the screen itself.
If you find it, change it to 60 hertz
  3. Check the refresh rate of the monitor from your operating system/video card's software.
In Windows, right click on the desktop, click Properties, then the Settings tab, then Advanced. Change it to 60 hertz if it's anything different.
It could be faulty but hopefully not.

Couple of things there to try...let us know how you go

I just bought an X223W Acer LCD monitor. The texts appear blurred on the screen. What adjustment do I need to make it sharp? Thanks.

You probably need to up the screen resolution.
Start/Control Panel/Display/Settings tab/Screen resolution.
1024X768 minimum.
While you are in the click the advanced button then click the monitor tab. Your refresh rate will most likely by 60 Hertz. Down below that you will see a "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" check box. Check it. Now click the drop down arrow for the screen refresh rate. Set this to the highest setting there. This will stop the flicker that gives a lot of people headaches when they spend a long time at their computer.
