We had a service guy come out today. He charged us $60+tax to tell us that we needed a defrost thermostat and another $189 to install the new one with the $60 call fee included. After he showed us where to install, I called an parts place and replace the thermostat myself for &20+tax. Well, that didn't solve the problem. The cold air from the freezer is not blowing into the refrig. Is there a fan in the freezer area? The only fan i hear is the one running in the back of the unit. I cannot hear the compesor---i don't know what to listen for. I did turn the cold control knob all the way to COLD. I didn't hear anything on the refrig side of the temp control knob but i did hear one click coming from the freezer side once of the freezer temp control knob. When i did the same thing over i didn't hear the click. How do i tell if the compessor is not working?
On some Amana refrigs , the defrost thermostat has to close before the fan will come on . The coils will get cold and since the bimetal clips onto the coils , it will get cold as they do . When cold enough , bimetal closes and the fan will come on . Are the coils getting cold ? If so , then the compressor is working . You could also have a bad fan motor instead of bimetal . Recheck to see if you hear the fan in freezer now .
Testimonial: "We think that the door on the freezer was ajard before leaving for on a trip. In turn, the thermostat failed. Thank you for the solution. "
