I have an above the ground pool with a proline pump, its was on and i turned it off. when i went to turn it back on it just hums and wont start again, whats wrong?
Inside the back case on the motor you'll see a white piece with two copper colored arms that have two silver points that almost touch. If these are rusty I've found that the motor won't turn over . A quick fix is to take some 600+ grit Aluminum oxide sandpaper and give each of those contact points a brisk sanding to remove any oxidation. This will help the points make a positive contact . Make sure while very obvious that the motor is unplugged first. If your pump has been leaking water it could be that rust has formed on the inside and is preventing the motor from operating properly. Which requires more aggressivedis-assembly to diagnose. You can take it to a motor repair shop if the above listed doesn't work

C. MOTOR HUMS, BUT DOES NOT START—
Check for:
1. Centrifugal switch stuck in open position.or if capacitator start could be bad capacitator. Possible loose connection.
2. Binding of motor shaft. (something stuck in impeller) Does motor turn free. IF not check for jamed impeller. If it she sp2605x7 you can view a manual here: http://www.haywardnet.com/products/Manuals/pdfs/manual113.pdf
The impeller is still jammed you need to get it cleaned out. You can try with a pair of needle knose pliers if that doesnt work your gona have to remove the pump bolts that hold the motore to the pump pod. Remove the bolts around the motor and seperate it this will give you better axcess to the impeller. Clean it out and try to move it if the impeller will not spin freely with the debris removed the motor has burned up .
sounds like the windings in the motor are shot! but does it have a capacitor? if it does you could simply have a bad starting capacitor so don't let it hum for that will surely scar the windings
