I am trying to install the flash player plugin for Firefox under Mandriva Linux.
I have downloaded and run the .rpm file for flash 10 from the Adobe website, and it shows under the Mandriva Linux Control Centre as installed, but firefox is not recognizing it and keeps asking me to download the plugin.
As an ex-Windows user I am not very clued up on the techy side of Linux, so ''idiot proof'' help much appreciated
I have the libflashplayer.so downloaded, I have removed the existing flash player installation
BIG Question - where is ~/.mozilla/plugins ?
I am totally lost as to how Linux organises its files, Windows - no problem I used it long enough :)
I tried doing a search for mozilla and .mozilla
. mozilla turned up just 1 file - a vnd.mozilla.xul+xml.xml file in /usr/share/mime/application mozilla turned up just 1 folder - /usr/share/mdk/bookmarks/mozilla which seems to be just bookmarks
I told you I needed the idiots guide :)OK,

You can't post conmments that contain an email address.
2. Save the .tar.gz file to your desktop and wait for the file to download completely. 3. Quit your browser. 4. Remove all existing Adobe Flash Player installations from the system. 5. Unpackage the file. A directory with contains libflashplayer.so will be created. 6. Copy libflashplayer.so to ~/.mozilla/plugins. Create the 'plugins' folder if it does not exist yet. 7. Launch your brower. To verify installation in Firefox choose Help > About Plug-ins from the browser menu.
Hope this solves your problem, please let me know as I was also an ex-windows user and the switch over requires allot of new learning for the linux environment.

Ok, there are a number of issues with you spelling so I am going to assume you meant the Ubuntu OS. If that is the case the Flash Player install is done by the following:
If you are using the more modern versions of Ubuntu, simply install the Adobe Flash application from Ubuntu Software Centre.
If you are using a version that does not support the Software Centre, try:
Go to the Adobe website.
Click on "Download the Latest Player," and choose ".deb for Ubuntu" from the drop down list.
Choose "Save File" from the pop up window.
Open a terminal window.
The terminal window will be found under Applications -> Utilities.
Change to the directory where your downloaded file was saved.
cd Download
Install the libcurl3 library: sudo apt-get install libcurl3
Install the Flash Player: sudo dpkg --install install_flash_player_<version>_linux.deb
Replace <version> with the latest version number.
Not sure that you have the correct plugin OR its not upto date then check this link and it will tell you remember not all plugins are dervived for XPI add-ons like the Microsoft Silverlight Plugin and the DivX Web Player
Another great way to find out what plugins that are loaded into Firefox is to use the my config option in the Mr. Tech Toolkit add-on you may want to check the show descriptions + filename in the options menu to display the DLL file and Version info.
Update of Flash player can help. If you use IExplorer, you can try with Mozilla Firefox browser, because flash plugin is little different in coding. If you can not see in real time video, you can download from YouTube to computer and than you can play (I suggest VLC player). You can download with installing DownloadHelper plugin in Firefox. It will add icon with rotating points with some arrow. You just click on arrow and you have list of videos for downloading. FLV is for flash, and MPG for MPEG video coding (the same video is in different quality). Sometimes your problem can be with directx. Try to update it too.
The following guide, originally written for Firefox 2, has been
used successfully on Firefox 3, Firefox 3.5 and Firefox 3.6. Users of Firefox Portable edition (versions 3, 3.5 and 3.6) also have been successful using this guide.
The Windows computers available at my University permits login only
by autenticated users (students) who don't have Administrator access and
permissions.
Installing software on those PC is then not possible.
Recently they finally installed Firefox 2 but without the Flash plugins, which is absolutly useful/needed.
I then tryed to install the Flash Player using the "standard" way
(click on the missing plugin link then install the plugin..). However
without administrator plugins it was not possible to install.
Then I started doing some tests trying to install the plugin manually. Now I have it installed and working perfectly!
This is how I managed to install it without administrator permissions:
Download the XPI archive of the Flash Player Plugin
to your hard disk (right click on the download link then "Save link
as.."). XPI archives are only ZIP files containing the files used by the
plugins. A more updated version of the plugin is also available here.
So you can safely rename the file you just downloaded, called flashplayer-win.xpi, into flashplayer-win.zip (you are changing its extension from .xpi to .zip)
Extract the files in the archive. You can use any program capable of opening .zip files (WinZip, WinRAR or the free and great 7-zip). There are also websites which can uncompress archives: wobzip.org.
Copy the files flashplayer.xpt and NPSWF32.dll to %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Plugins\
%APPDATA% is not a real folder. It's an alias. By inserting it in your windows explorer
address bar, you'll be redirected to the real folder which holds your
applications profiles and settings. The location of this folder depends
on various setting that's why we need the alias and not an absolute
path.
You can open this folder simply choosing "Start ? Run ? Type in %APPDATA% ? OK".
In case you don't have a Plugins folder you can create one and place your files there.
The adobe plug in is the "flash video player" for internet explorer and firefox web browsers. Flash video file extension .flv When the message pops up, there should be a link that you click on to download and install the plugin. Or visit www.adobe.com and dowload from there.
Ok what you need to do is click where it ask for you to install the flash player it will say it can't do it so click on manually, then you will be redirected to the compatible flash player you need. after the install it should automatically restart firefox. Sometimes you will recieve and error that says close firefox and try again. just close all windows that are firefox downloads window to and click try again repeatedly until it goes through. there you have it fixed avatar
Is your PC running with Win XP with Service Pack 2 or higher? Which browser do you use ( Internet explorer or Mozilla Firefox) Check out the Add Remove Panel for the Latest installation of 1. Adobe Flash Player ActiveX 2. Adobe Flash Player Plugin
You need to uninstall Java and Adobe Flash Component from PC.
First, it is better to run in "Safe mode with Networking"; by pressing F8 key during Bootup.
After then, Uninstall Java, Then uninstall Adobe Flash component from the control Panel, then reboot PC. Let me know after this if you are able to download and install the latest version of Java and Flash plugin from the link given: Java Plugin Flash Player . And then reboot PC. Let me know the status after it.
do you have firefox? if you don't then you should get it. all you do is visit youtube, when it says 'you need a plugin to view the content on this page' click 'download plugin' pick one of the options(there should be 2-3 of them) let it download and install, then restart firefox. it should now play any new or old flash games, movies and the like. you can also get a plugin for firefox to download youtube videos.(firefox is also more secure and faster than internet explorer(any version)) cheers!
OK,
