Garmin c330 Navigation quirks

On two recent trips, while driving on a US highway, my Garmin c330 has directed me off the highway onto a parallel side street or side road. These excursions did not seem to offer any noticable distance or time savings. What can I do to prevent this in the future?

Garmin nuvi seems to go long routes and wrong side of street all the time,is their a rest or calibre button or something.

I checked the information in my Garmin c330 manual and I can select faster time or shorter distance for routing as part of customizing navigation. Unfortunately, it is unable to correlate my street address with the correct side of the street. Even entering a "fake" street address does not help.

Free map updates for Garmin c330

Garmin has released new maps. Most of their units are entitled to a free update if the unit was purchased recently Just a heads up to anyone who recently purchased a C330. According to Garmin's tech support, the map udate 2008 is not free to those of us that recently purchased a C330. Only to those who purchased a C340 and up. Their excuse is that it is a "low end" unit, and also that the memory cannot hold the full US maps on the DVD. Gee, I can purchase the update for $69.99 and load a subset of the maps if I want, according to the person in tech support, but I cannot receive it as a free update. So, apparently buyer beware if you purchase Garmin's "low end" units. You will apparently not be able to receive a free update of maps, even if the unit you buy is already out of date.

According to the Garmin site:

Question: Why does my nuvi route me off highways and through small side
roads?

Answer:
If your nuvi routes you off of the highway and puts you on small side
streets, usually there is a simple navigational settings change that should
resolve the issue for you.

From the 'Where to?'/'View Map' screen:

Touch the 'Wrench' icon.
Touch 'Navigation' icon.¹

On this menu there will be a 'Route Preference' and 'Avoidances' menu
option.

If you have the 'Route Preference' set to 'Shorter Distance', this may
sometimes route you off of a highway to put you on a more direct route. Try
setting the 'Route Preference' to 'Faster Time' and see if that makes a
difference in how the unit routes you.

Another setting that can be adjusted is the 'Avoidances' option, touch on
'Enabled' next to 'Avoidances'
A list of avoidances will appear, on that list if 'Highways' is checked
then the unit thinks that you do not want to travel on highways and
therefore routes you off of them. Simply uncheck the box next to 'Highways'
and that should resolve the issue.

I had "highways" listed, so I'm hoping this fixes my problem tomorrow.

Wrong information

Your unit is defective. Return it to the store or get Garmin to repair or replace it. I hope it's still under warranty. The wrong directions are typical of all GPSes but the screen freezing means that your device is broken.
