There are blueish-purple crystal-like distortions in the projected image. They actually can be brought into focus to look at, and at that point the projected image is extremely out of focus. So, obviously, when the image is in focus, the crystal-like things are out of focus and blurry. What's causing this?

Either there is something on the inside of the lens, or there is something on the lcd prism face. if it was the lcd panel, it would be in focus with the picture. take it in for a good cleaning.

Remove purple haze around edges

The set needs to be focussed and reconverged. The red and blue images combined make a magenta/purple image. Adding green makes it white. Depending on the type of TV, if it's a CRT projection TV then there's an electronic focus control for each of the three tubes as well as the mechanical adjustment of the optical lenses. Given the description, then I'd have a look at the electronic focus first. A sudden shift in focus suggests that something in that circuit has given out. This would cause the red and blue images to go soft enough to create a halo around objects on screen.

Double image

If your TV looks 3D, warped, or distorted it likely has a convergenge problem.
If however it just looks dull, washed out, redish, greenish, or blueish or if it looks like objects on the screen have halos the fluid in the lens has soured.
You can search google for parts or you can get the parts with repair instructions from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com

Double image on screen on 52"projection screen

You'll need to do a "Convergence" procedure on your television, which re-trains the
three color guns to focus on a single point, correcting the double-image problem.

This link points to a how-to video & also how-to instructions:
http://www.fixya.com/support/t7212007-colors_separated_double_vision

The procedure is actually in the instruction manual for your TV, and at least one mfr recommends that
this procedure be performed on the TV once each month.

The right side of the TV has shadows/distorted images and colors

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projeciton sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you are handy and can follow directions. You can get complete repair kits from TvRepairKits.com or click here. They have put together DIY repair kits that include the OEM parts and step by step photo instructions for each repair. If you are not handy or can't follow directions we would suggest calling a shop.
