the system is new - Intel DQ965GF motherboard - latest bios there is from november 25 2007 by intel, 2GB RAM 667mhz by KINGSTON, Win XP Pro SP2.
The issue is with all USB devices - the odd thing is that they are recognized only after restart, if they where connected to the computer before startup had started. Once I disconnect them correctly and try to connect them back on, they are all once again not recognized.
If i uninstall through device manager all the usb related objects and then scan for changes - during the automaric reinstall the desired usb device is accessible but not recognized.

I installed all the latest motherboard drivers.
Uninstalled through safe mode all usb related objects in device manager and reinstalled them back in regular mode.
I even added a line to the registry to prevent automatic shut down when idle or ports unused.

I even reinstalled windows and once again the problem remains.

    thanks in advance

When USB devices are not recognized and work only when connected before startup you should verify latest bios and drivers. If that does not help the problem is with the motherboard hardware.

I have a Sandisk Micro Cruzer 2.0GB flash device that stopped working. It worked fine the first several times it was used on my WinXP-Home system. Now the pc says that the device was prepared for safe removal but not removed (error code 47) and suggests I unplug it and plug it back in, or restart pc. I've tried both...no change. A friend who knows quite a bit about computers says maybe the Cruzer needs reformatting. While looking for instructions on reformatting I stumbled onto this thread and decided to post. Any advice?

I have a Dell 4000 (I know old) but it works great except I was working and in the middle of something when A USB port message popped up saying "a device connected has malfunctioned" I have double checked and device is fine anywhere else. I have tried other travel drives and my wireless mouse all work anywhere but my laptop. I even backed up my laptop to a previous save. Nothing has helped I work on this and I am desperate for help. Thanks

Could you give me information on the computer your using? I'd need the mother board manufacturer, the bios manufacturer, the bios revision number, The operating system your using, The revision number of your operating system, And is it only usb storage media that your having trouble with, or does your issues include usb imaging devices?

It shows one of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognized it

it could be a few different problems by going to your manufacturer website and checking to see if you have the latest bios and drivers for your motherboard, or the usb storage device is faulty have you tried using a different usb port if its happening on all of them then you will need to replace it as it is faulty

There are several reason why your flash drive is not working. You can try this and see if it will work:
STEP 1 - Connect the Cruzer to the PC

If you receive a "USB Device Not Recognized" error on the computer, the flash drive is most likely failed. Additional troubleshooting is unlikely to correct the problem.

STEP 2 - Check under Device Manager
1. Right-click My Computer, and select Manage.

2. Click Device Manager on the left pane.

NOTE: The Cruzer might show up under several places under Device Manager such as:
1. Disk Drives
2. DVD/CD-ROM drives
3. Universal Serial Bus controls as USB Mass Storage.

If there is a yellow exclamation point (!) or question mark (?) beside the device, try to refresh the drivers.

STEP 3 - Refresh the drivers
1. Right-click on the entry with the error mark, select Uninstall.

2. On the top menu, click Action then select Scan for hardware changes.

STEP 4 - Verify if the flash drive is detected
1. Double-click My Computer.
2. Look for the Cruzer under devices with removable storage.

you can try run check hard drive changes,
and let the O/S pick it up, if not pick from the list of hardware devices, choose
usb mass storage, click on it and look for the maker name, pick your model.

if this those not work, run the driver from the cd that came with the USB device.

if not you will have to go for a update from O/S provider.

We can fix it -- and recover the data (provided it is recoverable -- which it generally is). If we don't get your data back, we ship the drive back to you and you pay nothing. We've been recovering data for over 16 years and are successful about 85% of the time.

Sandisk cruzer thumb drive

This just means it is trying to recognize the device. All you need to do is allow it to recogniz the device and find the proper drivers. You can put files in here by going into my computer and double clicking the mass storage device. Files can be draged or copied in here, then taken anywhere you need to go.
