Lens screen stuck open and no image on LCD view screen.

It is jamming, the only really fix is to have it repaired, that costs a lot and it is sometimes better to just replace the camera.

Sony has a recall on some of these ccd imager problems. Contact Sony to see if your model applies, but it sounds like an imager problem on your pal format camcorder. Larry

Regarding can't see picture or time code in playback, it is problem of dirty / clogged video heads. Use good quality video head cleaning cassette to clean heads and hope camera will show playback picture.

Blue screen on playback on Sony DCR-HC40

You can see an image in a camcorder viewfinder any time the camera's actually on in record mode, whether or not the camcorder is actually recording. So that's no guarantee.

Assuming the obvious (you have the right kind of tapes, they're not in write-protect mode, you rewind before playing, etc). I recommend that you borrow a tape of the same kind from someone else and check it on playback in your camcorder. This should lead you know understand if you have a playback problem or a recording problem.

No image in the viewfinder or LCD screen when try to record...

I have recently had what I think is the same problem. I wrote to a supplier in the UK to see if they could diagnose it from my description. My camera is still not fixed as yet (as I have not sent it off yet for fixing), however there initial analysis was that it is 'Drive PCB' problem and a replacement part would cost £38 + labour + tax. I am not sure what the Drive PCB is, but I have the same blank/grey screen when trying to record but playback is OK. My camera is also about 2 years old.

Recording Still images To The Memory Stick M.REC mode (Memory RECORD mode) 1. Set the mode switch to MEMORY CARD. 2. Set the power switch to CAMERA. 3. Press the PHOTO button. The still image is recorded to the Memory Card. To View photos on the Memory Card M.PLAY mode (Memory PLAYBACK mode) 1. Set the mode switch to MEMORY CARD. 2. Set the power switch to PLAYER.
