Would like to be able to connect second laptop to my Buffalo air station router. At present I have a desktop and 1 laptop connected but I am unsure how to connect the other laptop.
First, you did not say if you want to use wired or wireless in connecting the laptop but note that there are four ports apart from the one used to connect the link from your Service Provider, now i presume the desktop is connected with a cable to the router with three more free ports(right) and the laptop most likely connected wirelessly;
There are two ways you can use:
1. Wired: For this method, make/buy a terminated RJ-45 cable and connect to one of the free RJ-45 ports on the router and connect the other end to the RJ-45 port of your laptop, DHCP is configured on the router and so it will automatically assign an IP address to your laptop. Test by trying to connect to the internet.
But the preferred method will be wireless, if so here is how to do it:
2.Wireless: Enable the wireless on your laptop by pressing the wireless button, then a notification will shown on your laptop at the right of the taskbar "Wireless networks detected/available" ; click on the notification window, your SSID (name of your router) will be shown, click on your SSID, if there is a password, put the password and click connect. Alternatively, if you are not able to connect ; it means the router maybe MAC-filtered and you need to add your MAC(PHYSICAL) address to be able to connect through the router, then you need to access your router configuration, but to do this you need your default gateway(DG)address, username and password: for DG address, click start - run -type cmd , click ok/press enter and in the window that comes up, type ipconfig/all: check for the DG address, also note the PHYSICAL address in the window, you'll need when you gain access to the router. Now open a browser page, type the DG address in the search area, it will open a window, type the username and password, then press enter, it will open the router. At this point, i will need to know what it says and if the first two solutions do not work, i need to be on a call to assist you from this point. All the best.
If you are looking for a wired connection, all you need is a Ethernet cable to be plugged in to the LAN part of the router.
If you want it wirelessly connected, run the wireless software in your laptop. In the available wireless networks, choose your network and type in the passphrase ( if you have wireless security enabled ) . This should help you connected .
Hope this helps
