Won't recognize my USB

I have a Simpletech USB 2.0 250GB external hard drive. When I plug it in to my pc, it will not recognize it. I have high speed USB ports, but nothing works. I'm using a Dell Dimension 8400. Any idea what I'm doing wrong??

Re: Won't recognize my USB

Simpletech USB 2.0 500GB (bought today) took several on/off then it puffed a small (smelly) smoke and fired up. I had rebooted the pc before this happened. I'm not sure if that was part of the problem or if the drive just needed the on/off action to wake it up.

Reading these posts however makes me wonder how long, and if this thing is going to work!

HP windows 8 does not recognize simpleteck hard drive

I purchased a SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 500GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive - Onyx for my Vista machine and all was well. Then I purchased a Windows 7 machine. It would not recognize the devise. I contacted SimpleTech only to be told my model cannot be used on machines newer that the Vista. Recently I purchased a Windows 8.1, did a little research, plugged the SimpleTech into the 8.1 and reformatted it using the Windows feature. The SimpleTech is alive and well on my 8.1.

My windows XP OS won't recognize my SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 300GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

I found that often, external hard drives just don't have any active partitions and thus don't show up in Windows. Go into the control panel, administrative tools, computer management and then the disk manager and see if it has a partition. If it's just unallocated space, right click and make one.

Cannot get computer to recognize my simpletech external hard drive. I have windows 7

A problem I commonly have is if the external drive is plugged in to a non powered usb hub the unit does not have enough power and will not be recognised, ensure it is plugged directly into the pc tower or if you have a laptop try an alternate usb port as some may not be powered.

Computer doesn't recognize the external drive

I asume the connection is via an USB?
Try another usb-port and see if that helps, if not try to connect the disc on another PC (maybe a friends pc) and see is that pc recognize the disc.

Good luck!
