Apple's recommendation worked for me... Unplug the USB cable. Turn the phone off. Then hold the Home button while reconnecting the USB cable.

Alternate option is,
just have him keep trying to put it into DFU mode over and over again, sould work with in 1-10 tries. if you get stuck on something like this, i suggest he just keep trying to do the same thing, change things around, unplug things and then plug em back in.
