....I cleaned the dust with an air duster. I noticed my laptop was overheating really quickly so I decided to clean the dust because i thought it was the dust clogging up the fans. So i used an air duster and managed to get almost all of the dust out. My previous problem with the automatic shutdowns was sorted. What happened was that my laptop has a heating limit so if the laptop temp is higher than the limit it will automatically turn off with no warning. So now my laptop would shutdown because the fans are not turning on.
First check in the BIOS to see what you can set for thermal limits.
When you blew out the dust I do hop you did not poke the nozzle into the laptop as this could cause damage not only to the laptop but to the fans a well. I also hope you did not do this with the laptop switched on as that too could cause damage.
Many compaq also ship with a small utility program that also allows you to set temperature limits. make sure it is set back to defaults and that you only make adjustments from here if you live in an extremely warm climate
You should also consider the use of a laptop cooling stand with at lease two fans preferably more. A good laptop cooler can be a lifesaver for a laptop.

Its quite an old laptop so i can't really get angry because i know what to expect. It was given to me free by a friend and the laptop is from italy so i dont really mind. Thanks for helping!
