I have two Que!M3 hard drives with 120 and 250 GB capacity that won't start. The green light on the transformers is lit, but the drives are silent -- don't spin up and don't mount. I've only used them on Macs, but not for several OS X generations. Now I think there are some files I need on one or both drives.
The light is green which shows that the drives are getting power supply, did you connect both the IDE cable and power supply cable at the back of the drive respectively? if you have then can you see any file at all? i mean can you manange to spin the drive? if you can't do with MAC then you cannot get any file out of them regardless of operating system, as per your question it looks like both drives are faulty
Can't you just put them in a external case and run them as such
1.Sometimes you can get them to run long enourgh
to get your data by putting them in a static bag &
plastic bag & placing them in the freezer fo a few
hours I have left some in overnight try it for
a few hours if you are leery of it and see if
there are any signs of life
yes this works I have used this method several times to get into a bad drive going
you are saying the drives are not gerneric
cant be removed from the case and
exchanged etc
I have only used this method with internal IDE ATA EIDE
etc with the respective cables, but if you do try this you
will have to be ready to tranfer the files because I have
only managed to get one to boot twice 1 time
since the drive is encased I would advise trying
as soon as you take out of the freeaer dont want
it to thaw to the point of water dripping just frosty
(I alway had them set as primay slave)hince the
better chance since they are on the same cable
But the fact that its firewire speed may be a
factor. If you know of a better way then dont try
it but if ifs just a last ditch effort then try it
Heat and use probably expands metals etc
cold contracts metals heads sometimes try
to bind to the platter the coldness prevents
this Thats just my theory all I know is that
it works

The drives are in an external case, which is the original packaging.
You're saying that freezing could cause them to start spinning again?
Some clarifications -- these are two external hard drives (120GB & 250GB) in identical hard plastic cases, which is the original packaging. The back of each is identical, with an on-off switch, micro lock, DC-in, and two Firewire 400 plugs.
There are actually two green lights for each drive -- one on the transformer and one on the right front of the drive -- both are on. Neither drive spins when it is powered on. Connecting them via a firewire cable to a computer (either G5 desktop or MacBook Pro) makes no difference. The cable is known to be good.
The 250 GB was working fine a year ago (I have a file listing) and the 120 GB was tricky (requiring a reboot to mount) but stopped spinning probably in 2005. Now that I found the file list, I know that the 250 GB drive has files that I need.
So the green light on the drive indicates that the transformer(s) are not faulty?
Does failure to spin up indicate a failure of the board in the drive case?
Can you give me a technical explanation of how freezing could enable a drive to start spinning?
