PC halts while formatting hard drive

I'm trying a fresh install of Win XP SP1. Before installing the OS, I use the format utility of XP (CD at boot) to NTFS format my hard drive. However, the formatting gets stuck at 70% every time. The hard drive busy light is lit up solid. But it never gets past the 70% mark.

Should I be using another format utility to fix this problem?

Your xp boot cd ,seems to be corrupted ,with system files missing, try another boot disk,or continue your installation process, from where your previous 70% ends.

Wiped old PC clean with blanco.installed win xp on old pc got response.turned it off black screen stating, blanco starting_ How do I fix

Blanco is a data cleaner utility that erases everything from a hard drive so data cannot be recovered. Unfortunately, this includes the MBR - or Master Boot Record. The MBR tells the comptuer BIOS how to access the hard drive and use it to boot up.

I would suggest performing a full FORMAT of the hard drive so the MBR will be recreated. If you are installing Windows XP from an install CD, you will be given the option of which drive to install the OS to. Delete all partitions that show up, create a new partition and then choose the Full Format option (not the Quick format).

If you are using a restore disk, you may need to download a boot floppy or CD and format the drive first. Boot to DOS, type in

format c:/

Where C: your hard drive.

You can get a boot disk from...

No login screen

As soon as you get past the bios screen, start clicking F8 to get a boot menu. Boot into Safe Mode.

Then right click the C:\ drive and tell it to do a full disk check with repair.

It will say it has to do it on reboot. Reboot, allow disk check to run and see if the problem is fixed.

If not, put your Windows disk back in and click Start > Run > then type sfc /scannow and clikc OK.

When finished, run windows update and reapply all service packs.

How to install os

This is a little difficult but it can B done :) Firstly I dunno if ya need to re-format ya drive? perhaps first ya could try to "Repair" of Win98? If that doesn't work, then, perhaps ya may have to re-format. If the Win98 is on a SEPARATE drive or Partition this also makes a difference.... Basically ... repair/re-install win98, then do a repair of ya Boot menu for XP, as Win98 sets up an incorrect Boot up for XP, and thus must be "Fixed" so XP will boot & show a Dual boot menu.. here are some links to help you step by step...
