You're using dial-up internet? That's what that modem is for. The computer also has an Ethernet port, on the back of the computer.

You have a small width computer case. Takes a low profile network card.

From specifications of eMachines Support, it looks like you just have
one - PCI-Express x1 slot, that is open. (Unused)

http://support.gateway.com/emachines/emac/EL1200/EL1200sp2.shtml

A PCI-Express x1 slot is small in length. It has 36 contact pins. 18 on each side.

(Not to be confused with a PCI-Express x16 slot. This slot is long, and has 164 contact pins. 82 on each side. Used for graphics cards only)

If this is so, you need a dial-up modem adapter card, that will fit a PCI-Express x1 slot, and is a low profile card.
(Low profile in height)

That would be the second card down listed on the above page. The Model 3035.

If my information is incorrect, and you have an open available PCI slot,
(White in color. 124 contact pins. 62 on each side), you need the first one listed,
Model 3030

These are the places that carry them,

You should be able to get one at any computer store, big box store, staples, even some other supermarkets, radio shack.

so long as you get a pci express one as indicated in your question the actual brand would not matter.

It would come with a driver CD and windows may even find it itself.

I cannot find the specifications for an EMachine 1161-05 desktop. Just want to know if the motherboard will take a PCI sound card.

According to NewEgg it has one PCI slot, but already in use. CNet mentions a modem. This may be what is using the slot. Remove the modem if not in use.

Simplest way is to open it up and verify.

Intalling GVC Anatel modem model#SF-1156I/R2F

Dell used this modem in their Dimension Desktops. If your modem has a sticker on it with D P/N 08F217, (Dell Part #) the driver for Windows 2000/XP may be one of these two files:

Try this first:
ftp://ftp.dell.com/comm/R58827.EXE

If that does not work, try this:
ftp://ftp.dell.com/comm/R47698.EXE

Another useful site:
http://download.modem-help.co.uk/mfcs-D/Dell/
Scroll down to the GVC modems. There are several different 1156I models, but I could not figure out how to tell which model I have using their Zinc, Graphite, Titanium, etc naming convention.

I doubt you will find a Windows Vista driver???
