When anyone leaves a message on my answering machine, the recording ends with the message "The service requested is not available on this line". The caller doesn't hear this. Any idea how to stop this?

Your machine is set to the announce mode, where it only plays an outgoing announcement without taking any incoming messages. You want to switch it to the record mode, where it will record incoming messages. Since you declined to specify the model of your VTech system, I can't tell you how to switch it. I can only direct you to enter the model number into the search box here to download a copy of the manual.
To Create Your Personal Greeting: 1. Press the Check Voicemail key or press the Feature button, then 981 2. Enter your password 3. Press the ADMIN softkey 4. Press the GREET softkey 5. Press the REC softkey 6. Press the PRIME softkey 7. Press the YES softkey 8. At the tone, record your new greeting, press the OK softkey to end your recording and then the OK softkey again to accept the new recording
Please let us know if that was helpful enough.
Good Luck & Thanks
This was a new phone I was using,& didn't realize I had voice mail on it. When it rang 2 times, it recorded the message before I answered on the 3rd. or 4th ring, giving me a dial tone. It is all fixed now.
make sure you retrieve all messages . I mean you may have 0 new messages, but you have lots of old messages ,it may full too.
Otherwise, delete all message, try to record incoming message or record your personal greating. Make sure the record function work, record chip works as well.
Well, your machine might be broken, or you haven't set the little switch on the unit to ANS.The switch is on the side of the machine where the cables come out.But here are the instructions from the manual:
Recording Outgoing Messages:
Your answering machine has a built-in outgoing message, "Hello, please leave a message after the tone."You can use this message or record your own.
1. Hold the ANNC/DAY/<<, and speak clearly into the microphone, no more than 10 inches away.
2. Release the ANNC/DAY/<< when you finish.Your answering machine beeps and automatically plays back your recorded message.
*Your outgoing message must be between one and 60 seconds.
*If you record your won message but wish to revert to the pre-recorded message, press DELETE during playback of your outgoing message.
I have model no. 1188 bellsouth digital answering machine. If you have to leave a message, the message I recorded is no longer there, there is a generic message saying please record your message. How do I go back and record my voice with my message. I cannot find my original manual.
Make sure answer machine function is turned on. Bottom right button.
Make sure an outgoing message is set. Should see a <-> arrow in the display screen. If not, press the <-> button. To record outgoing message... the press the middle button; record out going message; press middle button. Wait a few seconds and you should be set. Hope this helps
