The 2.3 four has a plug in the middle top of the timing cover, the cover also has the gage where you set the spark timing right abovr the crank pulley. with the cover in plce and the plugg out the cam gear has a cut mark in it that needs to be lined up with the pointer that you can see thoght the plug hole in the cover. the crank pulley has a timing mark that needs to line up with the 0 spark timing mark. the oil pump distrubuter pulley looks just like the cam pulley and is turned to the same clock position as the cam pulley. To check that its right remove the disturbuter cap and the rotor should bepointing to where the # 1 plug wire hooks to the cap. It'll run with the cover off so start and see. Autozone and advance autoparts when they look up the car can print out a picture of the marks. Of course they can sell you the book that covers your car for around $12 that shows all the services to your car that your likly to be able to do your self and while reading in it you may find of things you haven't thought of that you should be doing to keep your car good

If you mark your timing gears, crankshaft & camshaft against the cyl. head & block with white paint before removing the old belt you really can't go wrong. After fitting the new belt rotate the engine by hand and re check your marks.

1992 Ford Mustang LX 2.3. What is the easiest and quickest way, to tell its in time?

In general the best and safest method is to use the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and the camshaft pulleys. If no work has been done on the engine a simple way is to listen to the engine as it is running. An engine that is out of time when at idle and being revved will run unevenly, have rough acceleration and possibly a lack of power. If it is really far out of timing it will make lots of nasty noises as the valves hit the pistons.
If your setting up the engine after major work, like a timing belt change or a head gasket replacement, You MUST use the timing marks on the crank and camshaft pulleys to avoid doing serious damage.

Set the crank to TDC using the timing marks, Then look for an arrow or a mark on the cam shaft pully and another mark on the block. Line those up. Put the belt on, make sure the marks did not move.

I am tryin to reduce the size of my cerpentine belt by deleting my a/c, powersteering pump, and smog pump on my 1990 ford mustang lx 5.0. How do i route the belt so that everything still spins the rite way...

thats a trial and error job. mark each pully as it is normally and then run a piece of sting to give you your length and possible route taking into consideration slack needed for belt tensioner to act properly

1990 ford mustang lx 4cyl, auto blew out it's transmission fluid. what caused this? new seal and fluid, seems to be fine. is is okay now?

a Plugged vent on the tranny could cause this and an overfill of transmisson fluid could cause this, but without inspecting it would not know the cause or if it would strand you again?

Changing timing belt

LINE THE POINT ON THE CAMSHAFT SPROCKET WITH THE DIMPLE IN THE HEAD, THEN THERE WILL BE A NOTCH IN THE CRANKSHAFT SPROCKET THAT LINES UP WITH THE NOTCH RIGHT ABOVE IT, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIND IT! MAKE SURE IT IS THE SPROCKET AND NOT THE PULLEY CAUSE IF I REMEMBER RIGHT THEY AREN'T THE SAME.
