It sounds like the print head is clogged. Turn it on with the cover open, as soon as the carriage moves unplug it. Slide the carriage to the left, you should see a pad on the right side of the printer. Saturate the pad with water, slide the carriage all the way back to the right, let it sit overnight.
You may have to run it through a few cleaning cycles, but it should print better.
