The problem on this Emerson VR4450 is that after the tape loads and the tape goes
around the head successfully and the deck is waiting for a command, push play/reverse/ff
the deck will put the tape in the correct motion for 5 seconds and then the unit will shut down.
All belts are fine and idler assy. looks to be working.
All suguestions are welcome:

Greetings!
This certainly sounds like a faulty motion sensor under the the take-up reel disk.
The Emerson model you are working on is not familiar to me and I don't have the exact
service manual. You can probably get the part # from Emerson or Citronix/Panson.

Reel sensors. Does the count increment during the 5 seconds? See the FAQ.

On many (most?) VCRs, the reel rotation sensor is active even with no tape
inside. Turning the takeup reel with your fingers should result in the tape
counter changing. (May advance or decline depending on which mode the micro-
brain thinks the VCR is in.)
