Where can a replacement motor for the Broan model 678 bathroom exhaust fan be purchased? Local parts store said that Broan no longer makes them. The light works but no exhaust so I am assuming that the motor needs replacement. If available can installation be done from below or must it be done above in the attic?
I ran into the same problem, Lowe's carries Broan exhaust vents. They had both a replacement motor for all generations of 678 fans for $18, and they also had the latest generation of the complete unit for $40. I bought the complete unit, which included the fan I needed. Just unbolted it from the new bracket and bolted it to the old one. The new light housing, trim piece, and lens also interchanged. The existing one was old and yellowed, so this made for a huge improvement. All done from in the living space as well.
Broan has an On-Line web site that lists virtually all the parts for your model exhaust unit, including the motor. Here is the link to the web site.

Broan asks for an "Alpha Suffix" to be included with the model number, i.e. 678-A, B, etc.in order to locate the correct part.
The unit can be serviced from down below, in the living space.
Before ordering parts, first check all connections on the unit to make sure the problem is not a loose plug connection. Turn power off to the unit before you check any electrical connections and plugs.
I hope this is helpful!
I also went to Lowe's, but instead of buying the 678 with the 50 CFM fan, I bought the 679L which had a 70 CFM fan. I had to use the existing mounting plate as the design had changed from my old unit, but the 70 fan fit and worked fine. I also changed the light fixture as mine was orange and yellowed as well.
